I have not kept up with lasers for the last couple of months. I did a quick scan over the threads and did not see this discussed my apologies if so. Anyway I just stumbled upon this. Link below.

Don't know if this new module is a good or bad thing for us. Im leaning towards the bad side because form factor, heat sinking, price, driver availability and power requirements. It also does not look like the individual diodes can be extracted from it. Even if possible, 50w in a portable laser would be extremely dangerous though I would still love to see one built just to see.:p

In the info provided it says the module can be collimated with a single lens array though beam quality at distance is probably questionable.

Any insight into this new development?

HHHmmmmmmmm???????????????? HHHmmmmmmmmmm???????????????? Nice Find !!!

Array size....16 x 16.5mm....Wonder what the individual divergence is ???????????

A thought....Possible an uneducated one !!! ??? Output thru a set of Telescope lenses to compress the individual beams into a much tighter bundle ( And much more energy density/ apparent lumonisity)....THEN....thru a LARGE, LARGE set of cylindericals to bring the divergence under control. The larger the Cylindericals...the large the tolerance for off-axis propagation !

Are these 20 single emitter ??? are the 20 multi-emitter ?????.....and what about initial aspherical collimation ????

COST ???? Thermal cooling demands ??? Driver requirements ???

Lot'sa questions.....but....Maybe....just MAYBE !!!

Maybe we have hit the "KNEE" on the curve of exponential development !!! Hold on....Gonna be a WILD RIDE !!!....and..." It's a Laser Beam...you Bozo !!! "

Im the type of guy that bounces between hobbies every couple of months. Of all my hobbies the one with the most dramatic changes is lasers. The last couple of years it does seem like laser diode development is almost "exponential" as you said. What amazes me is the mindblowing amount of photons coming from something the size of a pinhead.

In the late 70's I remember drooling over the helium neon lasers in my dads Edmund scientific catalog, thinking lasers were too expensive to ever own. Then I bought the first laser pointer Radio Shack carried around 1992 for $88, I still have it and it works. A joke compared to today but I thought that thing was awesome at the time. Look at us now. Unbelieveable!:eg:

Hmm is right. It looks like Osram has a new 3.2W diode. They are chasing after Nichia, but still have
some catching up to do.

I feel like the power to run a 50W laser would have to by VERY high, and even to make it portable it might still have to be in an HID flashlight host - some of which can supply 80W HID bulbs. Would definitely be interesting to see though!

I would feel like a Jedi if I had one of those hanging out of my pocket. :p

Jeez...50W IN A HANDHELD what has the hobby become :D

-Alex

You can not use it in handheld without sheling huge amounts of money, imagine what heat sink you need for that:/

EDIT: + we still don't know the price...I estimate it in $$.$$$ or ok...$.$$$

I don't know about you guys, but I am starting to get a bit scared of who gets their hands on these things because if just one person decides to go on a laser rampage... Nice knowin' ya LPF

You aren't the single one...this stuff should be sell only here, imagine if someone take a 50Watt portable laser and the cut people in half.

EDIT: But to be honestly, who needs a 50W laser?! Even the suprem colectioner won't get something like that. For me even 5W is too much.

I don't think you guys understand. (Except CDBEAM, of course ) Just look at the picture and read
the article. There are 20 individual 3.2W emitters all fitted to one module. So there are 20 different beams
all going off in slightly different directions. That is all you get without some fancy corrective optics the
likes of which I have never seen and probably don't exist yet. This is like what is inside an M140 or B#%Q
projector, except in a preformed module so there is less work for the proj. manufacturer. The only
difference is that it mounts directly to a plain flat heatsink instead of the fancy 2 or 3 piece sink we are
used to seeing. So for us, this is essentially nothing new.

I beg to differ. That unit is way smaller than the mount+diodes in current projectors. It could probably be fitted into a portable laser flashlight, which would still be cool..

The BOTTOM LINE is that...technology WILL march forward......Should we be scared....NO....Should we respect each other and CAUSE NO HARM....to living things or property....DAMM RIGHT !!!

Like it or not...we are marching.....forward...and inevitability toward higher power....THAT will be the future !!

Let's turn the hands of time back.....back....114 years ago......MMMMmmmm.... What was going on then ??????

WELL....The "Horse Less Carriage " was just making it's introduction !!!

WTH !!!!!!!!!!!!! "It will ruin our way of life !!!! ".... "Imagine.... going 20+ miles per hour.....MADNESS !!"

Well.....It did change our way of life.....and when used in a careless/selfish fashion.....it will kill !!! Are we better off.....Some would say NO....Most would say yes !!! BUT...It just does not matter.... YOU ARE NOT GONNA STOP IT !!

AND....you will not stop the evolution of this technology either !!!
What controls and regulation will be following.....THAT is the question !!!

I am NO fan of regulation to secure common sense and respect....To me....this MUST and SHOULD be a core value....and should be ingrained on a family level.....BUT....well.....The real world is sorely lacking in this area !!!:eek::eek:

I will get off " Speakers Corner "....for now.....BUT.....we should think about what the future might hold !!!!.....AND...how we can protect our interests !!

And....MOST importantly...how we...on THIS forum...lead by example...regardless of age, education, gender, nationality....or anything else...windowcase...to the world....that these devices producing coherent light....are to be ...at ALL times...operated with respect and safety to all property and living creatures. Posterity will judge us.....and our combined actions....to some degree, will effect the course of events....NOW...that is scary !!

I heard a rumor that Nich!a is planning a similar device to this for their projector clients to stop the ability to harvest individual diodes or at least it is an added benefit to any other advantages as all the diodes share a single base plate and not just a bunch of 3.8mm, 5.6mm ,9mm, ect.. diodes mounted in a frame like we are used to seeing now.

So what will that mean to the availability of high power 445nm diodes?
