The batteries have little buttons on the positive terminal that cant be taken off safely. furthermore, radioshack has a "no return' policy. They were $20 a set and i got 2 sets (so 4 batteries total).

That sucks, but hang onto them as I know there will be a laser you can use them in hopefully soon. I made most of my diode lasers and I have 18350s that have button tops that fit many of my hosts. At $10.00/battery they should be very good batteries. I've never been much of a Radio Shack guy. I know they sell on eBay, but I didn't know they were unwilling to allow returns.

Motto, are you sure that the buttons aren't just "button top" batteries?
Why do you need to remove them?
On 2 battery builds you usually need the button top to make the contact.
Do you know if they are protected 18650's?
Staying in this hobby, like paul mentioned there's a almost certain chance you will use these in time though:)
