I ordered a 445 nm 800mw module from DTR and am excited to get it. I live in the country with no neighbours for miles so obviously i will be enjoying the power outside for awhile, eventually i would like to make a nice pen host for this baby, i don't want 800mW riding next to my jewls or anywhere near my family so i was wondering if i could make this diode run at around 5 to 10mw?

good question!! the reason is i like having the option of serious power down the road when the mood strikes with out ordering more parts. i also like knowing that the laser is running well below its potential so it will live a long life.

The diode probably wont get that low. It'll probably just flicker if you set the current too low. Try a single mode 450nm diode if you want less power.

I think SerpantSlayer hit it on the nose. I doubt the M140 will run that low but a nice little single mode Osram should and it would create a much prettier dot than an M140 anyway. If you gave an Osram PL450B about 30mA you should get somewhere around 5-10mW output.

Looks like a unique and cool little pointer Blord. Its a shame the driver isn't driving at the current you hoped. That being said for $80 is a damn good price seeing as the diode is $45 alone.

That baby is awesome!! That's the perfect size and power! Let me check with my wife to see if i can get the green light.

Keep in mind that 50mW of output isn't perfectly safe for one's eyes. You still should press on everyone present not to hit anyone in the eyes and to avoid any reflective surfaces. I would also suggest avoiding using it with any pet or letting children use the laser since it is still bright enough to cause eye damage.

I have been experimenting with this on an M140 and have found that the current has to be set at 160-180mA to get 3-5mW output. It's very sensitive though, as soon as you hit around 200mA the output jumps to about 30mW.

The M140 too much a powerhog to get a low output. It isn't very efficient at low power.
A PL450 diode need only 30-40mA to get 10mW output.
