Man you make it tough to decide on which kit to get. * *I'm torn between your DIY green and this one. *How bright is the blue ray beam at 80-100mw in the dark? *I know a green will have a strong beam at around 50mw, but a blue ray would be something unique. *Ideally I would get a Blue-ray that has a visible beam, but since the PHRs are close to the UV wavelength, I don't know if that's possible

Blu-ray beam at that power is visible in the dark, and you can make out a faint beam reaching out into the night sky...

But honestly, since green is the most visible to the eye, even a 15mW green beam will be more visible than a 100mW blu-ray.

If you want to burn, go with a blu-ray or red build. If you want beam visibility, you better start with green.

You will eventually have them all!

Here's a beam shot outside at night! Now, there is no smoke or fog, but the camera shutter stayed open for a few seconds to capture the beam. So it is not this bright to the eye, but it is very visible at this power!

This is my Pocket Mini/BDR/405-G-1 build at 375mW's. The face of the cave on my pool where the dot is hitting, is about 30' away...

Loading the tip of the soldering iron will make it immediately melt existing solder that you touch...

This is the key to soldering to your diode pins, and anything else. Pre-load your wire, clean the tip and pre-load it with a little solder, then when you have your lead wire alongside the pin, all you need is a touch with the solder iron and you have it soldered in less than 1 second.

About the snips, I believe I paid about $20 bucks for those fine tipped snips. You can Google the brand...

ok, thanks for the tip. i really don't wanna mess this diode up. still gotta borrow a soldering pencil. my soldering gun i think is too powerful. its a 120v 1.1AMP soldering gun running at 60 cycles.

I think i might just head to radioshack and pick up a pencil though. the tip of the gun i have now is too fat and for 8 bucks or so, getting a pencil won't be a blow to my wallet at all.

**EDIT**

Well a few minutes later and a little bit of gas later, I now own a small 15w soldering pen. woot! now to practice with it.

I have recieved my kit today. Thanks for fast shipping.

----

I have some questions for building. Should I use the diode with 4 legs or 3 legs from PHR sled? (I guess the one with 3 legs)

By the way legs of the diode with 3 legs are a little bit warped. I think that won't be a problem. Right?

Diodes before extraction:

Diodes after extraction:

The one with 3 legs is the PHR blu-ray diode that you want; the one with 4 legs is a combined red/IR-diode. This diode is good for practicing your extraction and (de)soldering skills. I ran it with 65mA (lowest setting on the FlexDriver) which it survived for only a few seconds before getting dimmer and dimmer. I've read it's rated at <15mW, so 10..20mA should do it. Pinouts here.

Thank you for your answer.

As you said, I first tried desoldering red/IR-diode and I failed. Then I took the chance of ruining blu-ray diode and tried desoldering it to. And I think I succeeded this time. Does it seem like I succeeded?
