Re: F.S. ***MXDL Custom Machined Heatsinks***

yea, jay, did you use different aluminum? or different tools on the lathe?

this one was even BETTER quality than the first one I got... the first one was awesome, the second one just plain kiks a$$!!!!

BTW, I can hardly tell the difference between a 6v MXDL heatsink, and the blu-ray heatsink....

Should there be any difference? They're both for the same MXDL flashlight host aren't they? :-?

PS: Jay, I will probably be getting one later this week. I'll send you a PM soon.

no, the Blu-ray heatsink is for the MXDL 3-AAA flashlight. the Red heatsink is for the MXDL CR123 6v flashlight

Blu-ray flashlight: http://www.dealextreme.com/details.dx/sku.3405 (use 10440's instead of AAA to get the required volts for blu-ray DDL driver)
Red flashlight: http://www.dealextreme.com/details.dx/sku.4171

amk, I use emery cloth on the finish. Sounds like I just sanded it a little extra nice or something. The quality, in my opinion is the same. As far as the differences between the two styles, your right. You can hardly tell any difference visually. But each are made to fit into their respective hosts. And you would find, that they are not interchangeable...

I'll bet that since Daedal first introduced his MXDL build, they have been selling them like hot cakes! But this open can diode that Gazoo got us going on here at LPF, is just an amazing upgrade to DDL's original build. With the addition of my custom heatsink, there are a lot of 250mW to 300mW (depending on lens choice), clean, professional red burning lasers out there now! I really think it is one of the HOTTEST, and best builds out there! Gazoo is of the same opinion:

^Wow, I guess I got my MXDL just in time, it shipped out just at the end of last week, phew! ;D. Can't wait for all this stuff to get here: diodes, heatsink, and DX order, all on their way at the same time.

Yeah...that's the one thing about DX. Can't beat the prices though. Just try and be patient. You can get your diode all ready for the build. That way, when the MXDL gets there, you can concentrate on getting the driver made right. If you take your time, and get it right, it will be well worth the wait. It is a very nice build...

Well, you can mount it in which ever module you plan on using. Then, solder the wires on to the pins. If you plan on putting the silicon diode and cap, at the LD, you can solder those on there as well. If you do this, you want to use as little 'length' as possible, to allow more room inside. (under the heatsink)

If you can make room on the MXDL board for the silicon diode and cap, this gives you extra room between the driver and the heatsink. But it is pretty tight in there. When I do this, I bore out the aluminum mounting piece so that it has a little bigger I.D.

If you build your driver like this, it is important to remember to discharge the cap, after you test your driver, and before you connect your LD.
Here is another similar driver I just built:

Take your time on the driver, it is the most important part of the build. Also, be very careful with the handling of the open can, and watch out for ESD as well...

Jay

Since you mention this, has anyone had any problems with ESD and the open cans? I have heard many warnings about ESD with the Blu-Rays (I suspect it may be the one of the biggest reasons for un-explained failures of those), but I haven't heard/read many similar things for the open can. I would expect it to be extremely sensitive to ESD if handled incorrectly since the die is exposed to the air. Has there been any sign of this? Do you wear a wrist strap or use an anti-static mat when using the open cans?
