Igor and traveller ,you two are misunderstanding eachother.

Igor thinks traveller asked him if he read diesels review, but traveller was asking Igor if he read his own review.

Thought I would clear that up.

...Looking forward to the burning videos!

Otherwise, good news! An express package from US, with your name on the sled inside just arrived, carrying the expensive but legendary BDR-203BK sled!

Your 8x laser will be ready for shipping by Tuesday. I need to do a careful plot of the diode first, and then make a new driver for it, based on the plot.

I have just add the movie of your "6x super-freak burning examples" in the Multimedia Section....

BTW, maybe it's better to post the address here, it's easier to be read here that "alone" in the multimedia...., so here it is:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=a4PI9jkffjg

So, now I'm waiting for your PIV suggestions for the 8x.....:D

Igor,

how's progress on the 8x?

i still want to send my 6x back for the upgrade to 8x and glass.

what do you predict will be the highest and safest power output on the 8x w/ glass?

The BDR-S03 8x's may not be up to expectations. I'll post a report ASAP. I was a little busier than expected, otherwise i'd already have posted it...

BUT i have ANOTHER HIGH POWER diode that just arrived for testing last week, and i will also be testing it this evening, as soon as i am done with Franco's 8x lazor (or after the PO closes )...

i was able to do a match light at 20 feet, but it took longer, like up to 2 minutes with the precise focus. mine is rated at 180mw. i did do a balloon pop at 100 feet, to me that was simply amazing. starhawke's 6x is rated at 196mw. he says he did a match light at 17 feet in under 15 seconds. does 16mw make that much of a difference?

diesel says it lit the match at 20 feet instantly. that's a 38mw difference.

Hmm, i honestly wouldn't know how long it takes to light a match at 20 feet, because i never tried. :yabbem:

I'm not much of a lazor-pyromaniac, at least not much for long distances.... I do burn stuff up close tho.

However i can tell you for sure, that a few mW SHOULD NOT make such a difference!

This is also the reason why i often recommend more conservative powers (or that IF a higher power is required it be reached with a higher efficiency diode, so that life is not shortened with too much current)...

Seriously, a few mW or a few % does NOT make a difference in visibility, nor in burning!

Much more important for visibility is the wavelength, and when it comes to burning, the most important thing is how well you focused the laser.

I don't know if Diesel exaggerated a little or not about match demolishing time. I'll ask him....

But IF he was really able to do it that quickly, then the focus is the only possible explanation. Because the difference in power between your laser and his is only 21%. It's not enough to make up for 14 seconds of difference.

Oh, 15s was Starhawke's result... There the difference is only 11%..
Focus or slight exaggeration are the only two possibilities.

Is it just me how does not have there laser yet...

Ben: Several favor-builds are late, because i was busy helping my GF move to a new appartment after her family lost their house..

It wasted a lot of my time, because she is from another city half the country away from me...

I just saw your email when i got back (again) this morning. I'll get back to you in a bit.

I'm sorry you had to wait longer than expected, but i usually make up for that with a special diode (= higher power at the same current)..

You'll get yours in a few days, as for the rest of the stuff you sent me, i'll send it separatelly this week, ok?

Igor, can't wait for your heatsinks to become available, you do good work.

If i knew they were in high demand, i'd offer them earlier.

The v3's are really special, because the diode is inserted directly into the heatsink! I also have some v2's left, if anyone is interested.

If you want one, you can just email me now, no need to wait for me to post a thread..

Oh, one more thing, this is important for anyone who has a v3 HS/M laser, or is interested in a v3 Heatsink/Module...

While designing the v3's, i asked my manufacturer, to make them fit plastic and metal AixiZ lens nuts nicelly. They thought they wobbled too much in AixiZ modules, so they made the threads "tighter"...

As a result, AixiZ lens nuts (metal or plastic) wobble MUCH less in the v3 Heatsink/Modules compared to AixiZ modules...

The 405-G lens from Jayrob fits into my v3, because he used the metal AixiZ lens nut. It might go in a bit harder at first, due to minimal "damage" to the threads of the lens-nut that occurs during machining (from the grip of the tool on the lens nut - altho in the future this might not be the case anymore), but after a little focusing, the threads adjust to each other.

But Larry's new "no-spring lens" DOES NOT fit into my v3 HS/M lasers or v3 Heatsink/Modules themselves. FrancoG just told me this a couple of days ago.

The reason for this is, that when trying to make the lens wobble less in AixiZ modules, they designed the lens-nut with wider threads, to fit the AixiZ modules better.

So what happens is, my v3's have tighter threads, Larry's lens has wider threads, and they simply won't go together, as Franco discovered....

Because of this, if someone with a v3 wants a short-FL/high-NA lens, you'll have to go with Jay's lens.
The "medium custom lens" will also fit v3's nicelly, as it will be in a CNC lens nut machined to fit.

Wait. Who's review? Traveller's review?

I never saw Traveller's review! :undecided:

I mean, i only just started reading and posting on the forum a few weeks ago, and even this is currently limited to the threads people send me links to.. :yabbem:

Way too much work, but i'm slowly catching up!
Now that the moving is finally over, i should have a little more time....

Traveller: Ok, i just found it! Very nice detailed and honest review! Thank you. :yh:

Maybe i should comment there tho..

I waited 8 months for my favor build. To my dismay my $62 diode was less than stellar in efficiency. Without hesitation Igor swapped it with a much higher efficiency diode for free.
Giving me almost 30mW of extra power at a lower mA setting.

So if you consider the fact that he is doing you a favor, and will hook you up with prime diode, the wait is not so bad. Your patience will be rewarded.

Thanks for everything Igor

um...nope, it's true, 15feet takes 1seconds,

but after 20feet, would takes much longer time,
i think the reason is - very difficult to focus, the laser line is likely becomes parallel at 20+.

(i tried to focus for at least 20min, the nut is very sensitive when the line nearing parallel,
but I also discovered that the lower power, the easier to control [for Aixizs' only]
the 120mW is easier to control, i don't know the reason,
what would you recommend for me to focus the high power one easier?)

Thanks Franco, a picture tells a thousand words. Admittingly, it's not the first time I've had the pleasure, but your post has rekindled my excitement over these beauties!!!

If my 6X ever goes south, I'm definately going to pay to have it upgraded to the V3... it's a nobrainer!

Hey Gaz!

So did you get it? I haven't heard back from you yet, so i wasn't sure. Or did i miss an email?

Otherwise, i think i have to stop promissing so many free favors. It completelly overloaded me at the worst possible time. I don't know what i was thinking... :yabbem:

But i promisse you, i had nothing but my best intentions on my mind, when i offered all those favors... :undecided:

Things just went a little crazy for a while, but i'm finally catching up...

So how do you like your module? Did you make a lazor out of it yet?

P.S. What do you mean by 8 months, didn't you send me the parts in June or July? We did discuss it much sooner, yes, but we never got around to doing it until recently.

Oh well, i think i'll have the last of the old promissed favors finished this week, now that i finally have some time for myself. Wait, for my work i mean..

Unfortunatelly, due to the way i select diodes during pre-testing, the likellyhood of a good one dying is next to nothing.

But you have not selected your bonus-build yet, saying that you'll wait for 8x diodes to become cheaper or something like that...

So you may get lucky yet... :na:

I'm testing a very special diode tonight.

BTW; the one on the top is v1, which i used for PHRs...

If anyone with a v1 wants to go DIY on the thing and would like a better Heatsink/Module, the v3's will be made available to those at a very low cost (almost "free" - well not quite, ask for details - this is ONLY for DIY purposes or upgrades to better diodes for lasers with a v1 Heatsink/Module!).

The v2's are already very good, and cost me a lot, so i can't offer the same thing. They should be more than good enough for DIY purposes, and are perfectly matched to the AixiZ modules inside. If someone with a v2 goes DIY, just remember to re-use the EXACT SAME AixiZ module, cos you won't find another that fits that snugly!

I used to go through huge bags of heatsink and AixiZ modules, until i would find perfect matches, where the module would fit as tightly as possible (without beeing too tight for removal), for optimal thermal transfer between module and heatsink..... Took me hours upon hours to test all combinations!

With the v3's this is finally not necessary anymore, since the heatsink IS the module.

Also, this photo beautifully shows, just how much more aluminum there really is! This is finally a real Heatsink/Module... :yh:
