Good idea :P btw the answer is 42

Back on topic... I just got this software package... its called Wireshark.

Wireshark (known as Ethereal until a trademark dispute in Summer 2006) is a fantastic open source network protocol analyzer for Unix and Windows. It allows you to examine data from a live network or from a capture file on disk. You can interactively browse the capture data, delving down into just the level of packet detail you need. Wireshark has several powerful features, including a rich display filter language and the ability to view the reconstructed stream of a TCP session. It also supports hundreds of protocols and media types. A tcpdump-like console version named tethereal is included. One word of caution is that Ethereal has suffered from dozens of remotely exploitable security holes, so stay up-to-date and be wary of running it on untrusted or hostile networks (such as security conferences).

Gonna go play with it for a bit

Default Re: Packet Injecting WIFI usb adapter - aircrack-ng

I was interning for a summer and couldn't get internet access to the place I was staying at, so I had to break some WEP passwords on the local networks. The first time I didn't have a card that could do packet injection, so I just listened in on traffic (boy those people didn't use their connection much). It was a lot easier with a card that did support it, and it basically paid for itself. It sure beat going to a local restaurant to use their Wifi.

I just used Backtrack 2.0 at the time, but with a custom compiled version of aircrack. Booting from a USB stick is awesome too.

A while back, I spent $30 on a wifi adapter because it had packet injection... turns out it only supports 802.11a/b and has awful reception, and barely works lol. I used backtrack 4 at some point, but I sort of got bored of it and now I just run all the programs native on OS X. Ettercap is my favorite, it lets me grab email, facebook, etc. passwords no problem. Wireshark is cool too. If I had a working packet injector, I would use kismac. Great utility.

Oh, got any pics of your setup? What routers are you using?

I have mostly Buffalo WHR-HP-G54, Asus wl-500gP ver1, & Fonera 2100/2200 as Kismet drones. I want to upgrade but don't actually have a need to at the moment. Been stalking fleebay for cheap Buffalo WZR-HP-G300NH & a Seagate Dockstar. Want to pair the Dockstar with an Alfa AWUS036H usb adapter & try it out as a new aircrack/Kismet drone.
Love openwrt/embedded linux.

I'm using 2 WRT54G-TM's and a 15db vertical oustide for my personal home setup. I'm linked to/through the other 2 WRT54G's at my work setup less than a mile away.

I'm really wanting to try out some of the new Ubiquiti items out. I setup up a Bullet a while back for a friend and it worked good. But the new 2.4ghz 20db dishes with intergrated radio are looking rather spiffy and with a super low price.
