Hi people,

I've ran out of options and turning to the forum for this.

Here's the story:
A friend of mine, a roommate, has a 10 year old laptop which is quite literally falling apart, and that's the most powerful piece of hardware he owns with no upgrades on horizon, not any time soon.

Me and this other friend decided to scope up some local PC repair shops and build a halfway decent PC for him.

We got CPU, MBO, Case and PSU from university. The rest from various friends, we only decided to invest into a somewhat normal GTS 450 GPU. The guy likes gaming.

When all the parts finally arrived, we discovered that, in spite of asking for at least somewhat decent dual core processor, we got Pentium 4 on the motherboard that was mafunctioning, southbridge shot to hell my best guess.

So we need a CPU+MBO combo, something in the range of LGA 775, Core 2 Duo series, somewhere around Intel E5200 could do. Athlon X2 processors on the accompanying MBO's could also do it.

Friend with old-a** laptop doesn't know we're building it, it's a suprise which we planned to bust out this week but as you can see that's out of the question.

PC repair shops aren't being helpful and local advertisements for used computer parts still think it's 2006 judging by their prices.

So now I'm asking here. Is there anybody regionally closer to me, in Europe (to save costs and time of shipping) with a CPU and Motherboard that work and are in the above criteria? To recap:
LGA 775 / AM2(+)
Intel Core 2 Duo (E5xxx) / Athlon X2 (5000-7000+)

If so, what would you ask for it? I guess we'll shell out a bit more, initially this was a zero-budget project, but I guess the surprised face of the guy when he comes home and sees a computer on his desk (and realises it's his) will be totally worth it in the end. We're gonna put up a hidden camera for that one.

Thanks!

Dang, If I was at my house in California I have an old MOBO, CPU, PSU, HDD, and RAM. Only missing the GPU. Not sure about any of the specs as it's been a good long while since I've done anything with it. If I was able it would have been yours. Many years ago friends of mine did the same thing for me. I almost cried when they gave it to me. I had just moved out and couldn't afford my own.

LOL, yeah to the best of our predictions, the guy will totally cry when it hits him :D He'll never see it coming...

Don't worry about it man, somebody else will probably have something.

Thanks for your reply!

E6600 is marginally better than what I got in my primary PC :D

As it is, current bid + shipping is 20 pounds, but the bids are bound to go up real soon I guess... I dunno.

I have asked my friend if we can cover it. Thanks for the link!

In the meantime, still open for suggestions
