Non Newtonian Fluid will not work...
At first impact with the Egg it will become Solid...

What happens whe an egg hits something solid...

What you need is impact energy absorbing material..

@bobhaha... if you have a large amount of Newtonian Fluid... it will easily and solidly
support a 200 pound man that is banging his bare feet against the surface...
(a mythbusters episode)

Ok I dont have any plastic laundry bags but I do have one of those black plastic glad bags. Should I cut it apart into a single layer rectangle parachute or should I leave it like it is (double layered) and just punch some holes in the corners for the strings going to the egg capsule?

But people were dropping their eggs off buildings and roofs and it wasnt breaking and they didnt have anything slowing the egg down, no parachutes, nothing. The non newtonian fluid and cardboard will absorb the inisual impact shock and the parachute will help reduce the impact shock before it happens.

no no no.. the way it works is by appling the force equally around the whole egg... go try this.. grab and egg and try squeezing it between two fingers long ways ie place the longest pat of the egg between your fingers.. and see what happens!

yeah.. the non-newtonian fluid incases the egg in a solid..

its not the egg hitting a solid... it's like if an egg was incased in concrete... very much protected as long as the egg is in the middle of the goop.

Yes the egg is being compressed on all sides and thus will not break.

Should I cut my garbage bag up so I have one really big single layer rectangular parachute? Or is it better to have a smaller parachute that is double layered?

ummm.. i wouldnt go with a rectangle one, unless you know what you are doing.. try make one that is around 1 meter in dia (round) that would probably be enough.. also if you find that when you drop the parachute it glides side ways.. cut a small hole in top of the parachute so it comes down straight..

thats your best bet!

cool.. make sure you film it so we can all see! also how much does the carrier, fluid, egg weigh? 1 m circle should carry around 1-1.5kg max so try aim for it to weigh less than that... i might try it out.. see the max weight. hold on (got spare ones from my rocket days LOL)

OK... I see the idea... the egg is inside the newtonian fluid...
and all impact forces would be equal all around the egg..

Never mind i worked out that for a 1000g load you will need between 115.9 cm (45.6 in) to 149.0 cm (58.7 in) diameter parachute. If it weighs more then that tell me and ill do the maths!

OH NO I CAN ONLY MAKE A 3 FOOT DIAMETER SHOOT OUT OF ONE PLASTIC BAG! How am I supposed to make a 5 foot shoot?

Im not exactly sure how much it all weighs But im guessing at the most it will be 2 pounds. I really think it will be around 1 and a half pounds though. I went ahead and lined the dodecahedron with crumpled paper so that way I didnt have to use so much non newtonian fluid. I thought the dodecahedron would be smaller but its about 12 in tall! So I figured there was no way I could fill the whole thing with the fluid so I made some paper padding inside it and put the bag wit the fluid in the middle. I will cover the outside with some paper to help cussion the corners of the dodecahedron.

Just as idea, cause you can't use commercial packing material (if i have understood right), and cardboard / corrugated paper IS used as commercial package material (here, at least) ..... you must build the dodecahedron yourself ?

If yes, can you join elastic bands to the inside vertex of the dodecahedron ?

Cause i'm just imagining a dodecahedron, with inside a "network" of elastic rubberbands that keep firmly suspended in its center the egg ..... :eg:


and about parachute, who said it must be round ? ..... never seen oval / rectangular parachutes ? :D

I've got this: Use the parachute this works. My kid did this in this years egg drop
in summer camp.

1 parachute use one from an rocket kit, old toy soldier ect.
1 pool noodle you know those cheap pool noodles from wal-mart... about 8" long

stuff the bottom w/ an wool sock. you put the egg in the pool noodle about half way.

you must stand the noodle on end and attach the parachute to the top stuff the wool sock under it's fool proof. PM me if this isn't clear

I padded the decohedron with paper on the inside and put my sack in it. I will test it today. I thought about using elastic bands but I was afraid the egg would hit the inside of the box.

Ok I found some painters plastic so I should be able to make the 7 foot parachute.
