I am about to build another computer and the person that I am making it for would like to have the ability to record himself and maybe his whole band performing. (RECORD SOUND NOT VIDEO) My question is, I have never built a computer for this particular purpose, so could some one please give me some pointers as to what I should put in it? Thanks

A web cam is not going to impress imho, but external cameras have gotten much better and cheaper of late. The best ones are almost as good as what the pros use.

He doesn't want to record video. He wants to be able to record hi quality sound.

Well I've always liked Creative audio cards, my old Sound Blaster Live! 5.1 could record CD quality audio no problem. I'm sure one of their latest cards would do fine as well.

No offense, I do believe you, but I haven't heard anything good about Creative sound card in years. I will keep it in mind though. Thanks

Asus new cards are great, try spending more into the audio equipment than the PC itself, maybe good quality microphones and pads to cover the whole room (I don't know the verb I have to use here in English :(). If they're gonna edit sound then get at least 2GB ram.

http://www.pcmus.com/Best-Audio-Recording-Card.htm

The best guide you can follow if you want up-to-date advice on picking a professional recording sound card.

Key thing to remember is to stay away from anything which advertises "soundblaster" or SB compatible, AC97 (audio codec 97) or "consumer" in the description of the card. Anything you can buy at any store such as Best Buy, Fry's, Walmart, or any other major retailer is not suited for your needs. Forget about any of your local computer stores too as they most likely do not carry professional grade cards.

I took this from the above link but this is a great thing to think about:

Gear and % of budget that should be spent.

Speakers and amp 36%
pre amps for 2 channels 18%
mic's cost per mic 9%
2 channel audio-card 9%
Software and Effects 27%

I recommend Adobe Audition for the software, plus a high-end mic. You don't need any insane cards, but Creative cards can add some artifacts to the sound. If they truly wanted a pro studio recorder you would want a Mac.

Here are some good links on the subject.

And I'm sure you probably have a good knowledge base on the rest of the machine, but this link may be helpful as well.

Cheers... :)

I might suggest M-audio products.

M-AUDIO - PCI Audio Interfaces

Very powerful, multi-channel high quality recording abilities, and it comes bundled with al the software you need for a pretty cool studio-in-a-box.

A good processor will be necessary, dual core... Have you considered a mac for this application?

The higher end creative X-Fi cards are awesome, I have one, but on Head-Fi forum they figured out a way to modify it and make it into a beast card that will blow away most things, that's only if you can solder with much precision and care. I haven't read much about sound cards lately though but that is definitely something to focus on. And yes, please go multicore with your CPU.

Thanks for the help. I haven't built it yet, but I most likely will in a couple of months.
