Argh!  So, my laptop (with Vista) last week boots up one day and says that the "desktop" files are corrupt and something like "launcher.exe" was corrupt and none of my desktop program icons show up (files/folders still do).

Well, I ignored it up until last night when I decide to try the "Windows Repair Console" to see if it can find a problem.  Well, I run it and after a little while it tells me it failed to repair Windows.  Fine, I'll just go back to dealing with it.... WRONG!

Now Windows won't even boot.  I've tried using the System Restore and every point I tried (all 10 of them) failed. No idea what to do now, aside from backup my files using my other computer and do a complete reinstall.

Frickin Windows!

A quick solution to saving your files if need be, purchase the USB adapter for a 3.5 hard drive. Pull the hard drive and attach the adapter, drag all needed files onto your desktop PC via the USB port. Though if you made your folders 'private' you may have a hard time with the security features in windows.

While you have the HD out you can also give it a nice complete format before reinstalling the OS. USB adapters for small and large HD's is a good thing to have a times like this ;)

Yeah, I ripped apart a 2.5" portable hard drive that uses a SATA to USB adapter and used that to transfer my files over to my desktop. Its still a pain in the ass, especially when I'm supposed to be studying and I need to listen to my lectures. Sure, I could do it on my desktop, but my desk is a mess, its just easier to do it in the living room... plus I can't go to the school to study either, without my laptop [smiley=angry.gif]

I tried system restore once or twice a few years ago, and had similar results. I've just disabled it to save disk space.

I recently installed vista ultimate 32-bit. I was against it for quite some time lol but I figured I'd try it out since the XP i downloaded was screwed up. With 2.5ghz dual core and 2gb DDR2-800 it runs pretty much the same speed as XP did :D But I must say I HATE the way files/folders are viewed.

try to boot off of the win xp cd-rom. select install windows. let it find your previous windows installation. select repair windows installation. this will NOT reformat your PC. it just copies the windows system back to their original state from the cd-rom

Damn WonHungLo, that avatar is nnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnniiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiicccccccccccceeeeeeeeeee!    :p :p :-* :-* I can't help but to stare at it.... she looks soooooooooooo happy!  And so do her twins!  ;D

Anyway, the best bet is to always have an extra hard drive, I have 3 in my tower, one just for windows and the other two with all of my set-up/install program files, allong with all my data.  So when my Windows does something crazy a simple re-start is easy enough, takes about 5 hrs to get my system back to where I want it.  I assume an external drive would work in your case.  My friend knows how to restore the boot-up back to a working configuration by giving a date, but I'm not too personally familiar with that procedure.

I thought this thread was about glass windows, because I would agree with the "Frickin'" windows thing since I always find a way to brake them and they always cost me laser money! :(

Nice boobs WonHungLo!

Remember, what has been seen cannot be unseen
