BIG capacitor bank

Remember that thread where i scared the bejeebus out of myself with a charged 160v cap? well guys look what I recently got to play with....

attachment.php

Sitting on the foreground cap is a computer power supply capacitor. The monstrosity its sitting on is 450v 2400uF, so that entire bank is 24 MILLI Farad :) Works out to be just shy of 2.5 kJ.

Heres the charger I intend to get them up to voltage:

Depending on what I want, I can set them up in parallel for 24mF at 450v or series parallel for 900v at 12mF.

Now just need to find a gigantic SCR to fire them - Should be fun launching hard drive platters with a lorentz coil, and of course the old favourite, exploding bits of wire :)

Photos fixed folks. It appears I goofed and had them way over the 800x600 limit in my eagerness to show you the caps :)

They work for me?

Those are some impressive caps you have there! I don't have the guts to even play around with a photoflash cap, screw that! :D

common sense and you wont get shocked - yep they're big buggers - I'm looking forward to wiring them up into a 24 or 12mF bank and having some fun destroying things with them :)

Waiting on my mosfets and the pcb place to ship my boards - Things, isnt that pcb fab place so CHEEP! ;)

hehehehe no way, they'll be hooked up via copper pipe hammered flat to make bus bars. the capbank+ and - terminals are just for monitoring.

Charging is accomplished by a special transformer made from a TV flyback with both windings removed, and rewound.

This allows "portable thumper" to go on camping trips and be charged from a 12 or 24v battery :)

now I just need one of those alarms - its sounds cool and "get back, something dangerous is about to happen!" :)

NOOOOOOO!!!!! what happened to that wonderful array of caps?! all 13.5kJ of them!

bizarre eh - I need 40 caps at my voltage to get pretty darn close to your 98 at a lower voltage. Dont you love electronics. Now I'll just go drool more over that pile of caps in your photo Trevor LOL :)

What were you planning to do with them?

For those interested, TGG's thumper does around 44kJ - even tho they charge em up to 1.6kv, the energy is still the same - so if they had one long string in parrallel it'd still be the same amount of power. I bet they have it arranged that way just so they can say "oh yeah our bank is 1.6Kv" ;)

(hint: TGG has 450v caps arranged in 20 banks of 5 x series, 5x in parrallel)

Sold 'em, sorry.

Shipping to Australia would have been unreal anyway. They weigh about 130lbs. :p

Dare you to be the silly one to short that out with a screwdriver ;)

Trevor: sadly altho I like em, they're 100V below my target voltage ;)

I think I have a few 450V ones laying around somewhere. Where did I put them...
