What are referrals? User Profile

On my user profile, under statistics, down at the bottom it shows my Join Date and then beneath it says:

Join Date: 8/25/2010
Referrals: 4

What does this refer to?

I'm just guessing here but when someone is signing up isn't there a box saying "Referrer" and it asks you for who referred you to the site. I guess everytime someone enters your name in that box you get 1 more Referral point.

Very good guess.... It makes much sense. But maybe a moderator can confirm?

Its just weird...I don't remember referring anyone....maybe a couple people at another forum or something who knows....

That's correct, it's people that put your name as a referrer when they sign up. I don't particularly get the point of it though.

I don't think it has any real role here. Other forums may give a bonus for recruiting new members I suppose...

^Yes. Some forums are set up so that you get perks, or points, or rep, or cat gills, or some other incentive for you to tell your friends about the forum to help it grow.
