If anyone posts a question or asks for help and someone here responds with what they need, why not rep them for their trouble? I see people helping others a lot, perhaps spending 15 or more minutes of their time to answer someones questions and they don't even bother to give a +rep. This doesn't seem right, if you are helped, at least do that much for them, even if their answer isn't exactly what you were looking for, they at least tried.

Of course, the system won't allow us to rep someone over and over again for each post, I just had someone help me and I can't rep them again for awhile, but I will keep them in mind for when the system will let me do so. I bet if more of us were willing to do so on a regular basis, there would be more laser guru's stepping up to help. I get something out of helping just because I know I did, but a thank you note every now and then would be nice for some of these folk. If I have ever missed given a plus rep to anyone here when they helped me, just remind me and I will give it. When I first started here, I was guilty of just wanting to take without a thank you too.

I think this is a great idea. I have only repped people a few times since joining the site, but have been helped tremendously on numerous occasions. I think I will go back and rep several of those whose old posts I learned from even when I wasn't part of the discussion!

Just a reminder it doesn't do anything to rep someone until you have 50 posts and rep power of at least 1. Here is some rep to help get you there. +rep to all 3 of you for no particular reason.

I agree people here need to give positive rep more often. You say one little fact about something that you thought was true ,but isn't and you get jumped on. That isn't how it should be unless you tell a member to go do something stupid or dangerous.

We should all learn from one another , I try to share my experiences and help to the best of my ability. If someone corrects me and shows a proper source I won't argue with them.

We really need to appericate the collective knowledge of this forum as knowledge is power.

Agreed!

Although one should help someone not because of the possibility to receive rep back but just to make this forum a friendlier place :)

Outside of being busy at work the rep system is the sole reason I stopped posting or doing much here anymore, simple as that. Certain members seem to target other members they disagree with quite often. Hate is strong with some here and contagious to others. I'll probably get some more neg for my opinion again oh well

I noticed this too. It's not the right way to handle things. It seems juvenile , unless the person is asking for it like USAbro. I swear it wasn't that way 2 years ago.

I disagree

score-wise --yes no change plus or neg rep- BUT the comment left can usually tell which rep was checked --so this falls into the 'category' of 'its the thought that counts..-- nice to see that they were aware of how those green bars got there---
I did laugh at a first timer PMing the he also gave me a '+5'--lol
hey -I was clueless about rep at first-
so hellyea
give those who give to you- just don't help for the sake of rep= or EVER ask for rep. never neg someone because another member PMed asked you to do that-

I have clicked NEG many times but only a few have I followed thru- I wont neg in anger or haste. === sleep on it- a few times the 'issue' resovled itself. (parts of post deleted)

ATM my points will bump you 5 or 6- BOTH ways-
something that should not be used w/o good reason= great power-great responsibility-

when in doubt PM rather than neg a member= give them a chance to tell their side--one guy got a load of negs for double posting- that's a bad deal-
for a minor 'sin' & he could not figure how to combine etc--wanted to start over not knowing you should never open a second acct.

some forums don't care at all
some are so SLOW they welcome ANY posts--ha ha

I like you're idea of pming a member first and asking them about a post some people are trigger happy with the neg rep button and they don't even give you the chance to tell your side of the story. Like say a scientific post. Some people will just neg rep you and move on even after you correct it.

The thing about neg rep is that it's more
or less permanent. Once the 'are you
sure?' button is clicked, there is no way
to take it back. I think only admin can do
it.

The good thing is, though, that it
eventually rolls off the bottom like it
never happened. There is no official
negative rep counter, only a rep total. So
as long as you keep making positive
contributions and others continue positive
repping you, it vanishes and everyone moves
on.

This is an interesting thread. I don't think many people think of the rep system when they're on the forum, since the most valuable information is contained in the posts, not the person's rep. But I do agree, the rep system could certainly use some more action. Glad to see this thread

I rarely neg, but I did a week ago to a new member I was sure was USAbro being a troll, but if it wasn't then I did the wrong thing, new members often post things which might be taken that way when they aren't. So, Lightheaded, if you weren't guilty, let me know, I will re-rep you with a positive when I can. I don't think I should have jumped the gun on that guy so quickly when I didn't know for sure. I was negged a few times when I first started posting here for replying to a thread that was a sticky, simply because no one had posted in it for so long, I didn't notice, I just saw the thread was right on top of all the others, then I became an arse about it and was negged to -20 something, I think. I also found out not to post about controversial subjects in the "other" section, even though it is for anything, some members take offense if it clashes with their belief systems.

I have neg rep only twice (I think) since I've been on the board in a LOT of years.

And believe me they deserved it.

neg rep should be used VERY sparingly.
