hey guys

random idea

would any one be interested in teh idea that members can have LPF subdomains, e.g. yournamehere.laserpointerforums.com

for security reasons i would only allow images, static htm/html/css/js/jpg/gif/zip/pdf/etc files (no php or perl scripts)
also would need to have people manually send me the files to upload so i can verify first, can't give out shell accounts / ftp accounts /etc
it is farty and stupid but would prob need to have a brief contract too (would talk to lawyer about it but only if people actually think this idea could be useful.. would prob just state that the person sending the files to me agree they own the material and didn't steal someones elses graphics /etc)

in return for the free hosting subdomain i would want to put one set of yahoo ads on the top of the page or along the side somewhere, it could fit the background colors or whatever

this is just a random idea and it could suck lol just throwing it out there.. lots of better free hosting elsewhere but the unique portion would be having a subdomain on LPF

if u actually might be interested in this please let me know

other options might include having yourname.laserholic.com instead (would be hosted on the same physical LPF server just have the laserholic domain).. i have this domain and didn't do anything with it yet so idea just crossed my mind about this

take care everyone

peace

I think there will be interest in this but...

Wouldn't this be quite a bit of added work for you? You already do enough providing us with LPF. Even with ads it doesn't seem like it would provide much return for your time.
How about our username as a subdomain on LPF or laserholic.com that just redirect to our site hosted elsewhere? Less work plus you could have an yahoo ad & redirect in 5sec or immediately by click.

What if we could loan the sub-domains from you, and host it ourselves separately? All you'd have to do is add an A-record - much easier and would put less load on the server. Then, people could either have an advert on the top of their page, or pay you/donate to the site, and we would be able to use PHP/SQL/whatever else we need.

"Eudaimonium@laserpointerforums.com"
You need 3 minutes to type that :D

But I definetly like the idea!
I could post some tutorials or ideas that are not worth the thread or something...

Sounds like a lott of work but if your OK with it. It does sound very cool.
Would this option be available to everyone?

I just got a camera and I'm planning on taking some nice laser related pics. Would be fun to host them on my owen page.

Too bad that domain name is very long already. They say a good domain indexed by Google involves a rapid indexing subdomains.

It doesn't matter what you put on your site if you host it yourself, and hosting these days is pretty cheap, well, if you don't have an extremely high traffic site. If it's just to throw up a sales page or whatever, even the most basic hosting package would work.
