Post Reporting

Just had a thought. Today I came home to check my email inbox, and 20 new reported post messages from LPF. Looked through it and found that at least 6 of those emails were reports of the same spam post.

If you find a spam post, or a post that you feel is inappropriate and should be reported, please do report it, but just give a quick post in the thread that you have reported it, so that 5 other people don't go and report the same thing

I've been involved with the administration of many forums of different sizes, from <100 users to one that's about 5 times larger than this. The only effective solution I've seen to deal with this is to beef up the moderation staff so that reported items are dealt with very quickly.

On the largest, we had 5 admins, 15 super-mods, and about 10 'leaders' (effectively mods in training, with very limited permissions). With a staff of that size, we were able to have at least one mod or admin active 24 hours a day. Most spam and other problem posts were handled before they were ever reported, worked out quite well.

Another solution I've used, was a vB mod that created a thread in a private forum when a post was reported instead of sending an email. That way the mods weren't flooded, and when a mod dealt with a report, he could just close the thread in the private forum so that the other mods knew that they didn't need to worry about it.

I for one will not be doing this, I don't think it's a good idea. Some people are very vindictive, like a recent member that was recently showed the door. You tell him you reported him and he starts trolling you and other vets until he's banned.
