I'm guessing this restriction is put into place to prevent URL spamming, but it's a nuisance to people who have good intentions. New board members who are writing a review can't link to anything, including pictures. One could of course make 20 posts quickly, in the category of funny posts or 2 word replies to reviews or multimedia posts. But I'm sure that's not what you want either.

Isn't there a more user-friendly way to keep spambots out? Math-captchas when registering for instance?

It isn't hard getting 20 posts. Just post something worthwhile in 20 topics...Done.

Petrovski, i gave you a few more posts so you can posts links now

it is clear that you are not a spammer. unfortunately the math captchas are not enough to prevent some spammers that have cracked the captchas. i was debating manually modifying the perl code to add a challege/reponse question such as 'what color is the grass' and unless green is answered registration will fail. however i am not very good with perl and would not want to mess up the forum.

sorry for the inconvenience but at the time this is the best way to stop spammers

happy to help

regards,

Thanks for the help Avery. Now I can complete my review of my 'ebayser'. ;)

I was not aware of the fact the math captchas were already cracked as well. Hmm the future for captchas looks bad I think in that case, more and more of them get cracked (gmail recently). The idea to insert a written challenge sounds effective, too bad it requires a perl hack. I'm afraid I cannot help out, I only have experience with administrating phpbb forums and have no knowledge of perl. Anyway thanks again for your help. Appreciate it.
