I noticed that LE was doing this 'supporting member' drive, where you pay some money, become a supporting member, and are entered in a raffle... I would be willing to put down some stuff, and money, and some other memebers could also donate, then we raffle things off, and all the money would go to C0ld.

I thought it was neat when I saw it on the stonetek website, and I almost paid LOL!! im sure a raffle and a "supporting members" thing would raise a lot of money. but then again, some could argue that its just copying LE ideas...

LPF has had raffles before LE was even thought up. And even if we did do it after, no one owns the idea.

How much per entry?

Sounds good :D

we were thinking, the more we collect the better the prizes. if we can get a decent amount, maybe an X-105, or a blue poitner... its all different...

Hey Guys,
    :)

I could be way off base here, but I don't think so?  :-/
But please read on, just trying to help avoid ANY potential issues w/ this raffle.

I would be careful listing and calling this a "Raffle"
In my past experiences, they all end up being defined or classified in some way as gambling, which was an illegal practice online.
It may not be now, and I know everyone has done it, but that doesn't make it legal.  ;D
I bet you the rules associated with a raffle to do it properly could be a nightmare as well.
In my opinion, it is always best to avoid any "potential" issues.
Though I know everyone does it and no one cares, just trying to be cautious for everyone here so this has no way to become a serious issue for anyone.
All it takes is ONE Idiot to complain to the right person or to know how to cause damage, and the nightmare begins.
I believe there are plenty of people like that around the world.  :'(

I have heard that if you state it as a "Supporting Membership Drive" which enters you into a "Free Give-a-Way" then you would be good to go.
That defines it far away from any type of gambling or any raffle rules.  ;)

Keep in mind I am not an Attorney and do not have a specific background in this area, just personal beliefs according to my past experiences from what I have heard, seen, or learned along my life. (I am in my 40's and led a full life, may be over for me shortly, but what a ride and that is another story)
So some of my beliefs, maybe all of which could be open for challenging.  ;D

Feel free to jump in.
You guys may have already checked everything that would need to be checked to cover everyones butt, meaning I should maybe take another pain pill and shut up?

Just sitting here w/ nothing better to do, so thought I would throw in my 2 pieces and see what you all have to say.
I haven't been around LPF for very long, but long enough to want to keep it free from any harm, if I have the ability to do so.

Best Regards,
 Joenobody

I wouldn't be too worried about it being consider gambling and getting in trouble for it. Sounds very unlikely.

I totally agree, nothing probably to worry about.
(but there is a word there that I don't like-probably)
Shoot, I know Casino online gambling is illegal, but most of the hundreds of sites for such are USA based!
And no one really cares or does anything about it.
But there is one of those words again, usually.
Those two words seems to bite me quite often.
So it was just food for thought as I am just sitting here typing.

I will- :-X

The internet is NOT regulated, and by law will not be regulated for a long time.

for example, you cant sue someone for scamming you online and not sending you a laser you paid for, but you CAN sue them for mail fraud.

(and no, opening a ticket with paypal is not suing)

so, you wont have to worry about being sued for an online raffle, and heck, if your scared, it could be worded as: "LPF fundraiser, donate and be entered in a free giveaway!"

(and opening a ticket w. paypal is not suing)-WTF? Who said that?

I believe if you read a few posts up, that is what I said, nothing really to worry about
AND
if you just word it as a membership drive w/ free give away then there is no question.
That was the only point there.

And if online gambling is legal, then why did I just watch a 20/20 report on TV about all the online casino style gambling based in the USA which our Government has classified as Illegal???

Quit busting my B*lls AMK, (how old are you anyways?) Do you want me to go to all you Bull$h!t posts and smart a$$ comment them all back to you!

Sorry to jack the thread for a minute, but I need to make an apology and I will -  :-X

Hey AMK,
Please except my apology. Yes, I was in a raw mood last night.
If you knew the box I am in, it would enlighten you as to why I may get on edge, but I shouldn't take it out on anyone.
When I asked how old you were, I was more refering to how much knowledge could you have on the subject at your age.
That may have not come out right on my part, oops.
But I was trying to be a smart ass, sorry.

So to you and anyone else I may have barked at, my bite won't hurt so please don't take it personal.

I am chilled, no problems here and sorry for the thread jack, I will -  :-X

Thank you all,
Joe

No one owns the idea for holding raffles for services/privileges/items.

actually, raffles originated in italy, so italians should have the rights :p

my sand grain to this thread:

look at it like this:
there's no possible way anyone would try to regulate, sue or prohibit a group of people from raising money by giving away their personal stuff or money.

so if u want to do it, do it as long as it is well organized.

cheers
