Vintage Light is one of my all-time favorite builds on this forum. It's inspired me to get into vintage hosts, and fall in love with 473. (Many thanks and kudos to ZRaffle and jayrob for a job well done.) I'd love to see more vintage builds, as there are a lot of great old hosts on eBay, usually available for $15 or less.
Anyone wanna have a vintage build competition? (I'd love to see more theme-oriented competition ideas, in addition to 'most original', which it seems like this thread is turning into.)
Other random thoughts on the subject:
- One month, while a convenient number, might be too short of a time. (I know that getting people to machine heatsinks, acquire parts, etc, can easily take that long for a build.) Perhaps making it a seasonal thing (e.g., 3 months) would result in more/better submissions. (e.g., 'Best <xxx> Host Competition Winner - Summer 2013')
- I like the idea of bragging rights as an incentive, and think that this might be motivation enough for most people.
However having sponsored prizes (in addition to a 'hall of fame' master thread with all of the competitions, how cool would that be) would also be cool, if it's possible to find enough sponsors. (Or get everyone to donate say $5 per submission, and buy a prize with the winnings.)
Though, you may want to think about a different competition, as things like this usually end up being, "Who has the most money to spend on crazy hosts?"
Those of who really don't need free prizes.
That's a good point. Maybe something geared towards creativity, effort and craftsmanship. I like the idea of everybody who can, chipping into a mystery grab bag. Doesn't have to be expensive, just cool or useful, on top of sponsored prizes like Moh's. A vet or Mod can hold on to said "booty"
I like the idea of a single-mode competition as well as the others mentioned.
I think we'd have to get over the idea of having any kind of control over rules and such if we're going to open it up to polls. Rules require enforcement, and that requires evidence and all manner of unpleasantness. Don't get me wrong though, I don't want it all whilly-nilly either. There are some logistics that will have to be worked out.
One thing is sure you should give everyone a chance to get in. In this I mean making a competition with various prices and categories. For example best host, obviously if I buy a $150 host and a $module than it would t be fair for the ones that don't have the money to do such.
I agree in making a limit to the cost of the eventual laser, and also have a time table that makes it possible to buy the parts and do the project.
