I belong to a gun forum and was very impressed with the idea of a main thread they have called the Gun Related Karma Connection.

This is thread can take on the saying "one mans trash is another mans treasure". There is a lot of laser things I have hoarded in my short time that I consider throwing away to make room for stuff and it isn't worth selling. Well what about getting some good karma by posting it in this thread and whoever wants it is just responsible for shipping?

Here is the Karma Connection Rules pulled from the other forum

Introducing the Maryland Shooters Karma Connection

The Kharma Connection is the clearinghouse to pass on all of those gun-related odds and ends that you have that are too nice to throw away but not necessarily worth selling.

This forum is in the spirit of what goes around, comes around and is modeled after FreeCycle® which does not permit the listing of these items.

Rules

1. All items must be firearms related. Non-gun related Karma should be restricted to the Water Cooler.

2. Cannot charge anything except actual shipping costs (this is different than FreeCycle® where you can 't charge anything at all for any reason, but those are all local and you can actually got to peoples' house to get the stuff. Not necessarily possible statewide)

3. No actual firearms, regardless of status.

4. In order to make this work, please do the following:
In the Subject Line of your post, use this format:
OFFER: item (Your General Location)
TAKEN: item (to show that what you offered has been claimed)
WANTED: item, (Your General Location) - Please use this one only occasionally as the intent of this forum is to help us clear useable items from our houses and put them back into use
5. You may not put items up FOR TRADE here. The idea is to get rid of stuff with no strings attached. Use the classifieds for WTT ads.

6. Your general location: Put this in the subject line as well as the text of your post.

7. 50 Posts are required to see and use this forum. You need not place such restrictions on your items for offer.

This is a service of Maryland Shooters to help our membership make connections between other members and to pass items along in the spirit of karma. Please use it as intended.

Let me know what you guys think about this we don't have to follow it exactly but it's a good idea. here is a link to my other forum so you can check it out

Great idea. I think anyone who builds lasers regularly has some leftover stuff/parts they may never use and would be happy to 'donate' to someone who might make better use of them.

It can't hurt to try it.

Thats what even if it isn't specific lasers but something that someone could use in something to do with lasers..... power supplies, flashlight parts, even misc. circuit boards.

I know we have the BST section but it could even be like a sticky but instead of a bunch of posts people can make threads ( i don't know the exact terminology for what I am thinking lol)

If it was a really popular idea, perhaps the best solution would be to add a new 'Karma Connection' forum, separate from the BST forum. That way, anyone could post a new thread with their free goods.

(That said, I suppose you also could just use the BST forum, and mark your stuff as 'FREE', as some folks have been doing. However the idea of having all of the free goods in one place seems more appealing, and easier to browse.)

Yeah I just occasionally post a thread for that sort of thing, but lumping it all together is good too.

Just as long as somebody gets it. :D

I like the idea :) But it should be encouraged that people don't take everything. Some people can't be on all the time, and for one person to just say "I'll take it all" would be kind of low.

What if you are limited to one or two a month? I trust we can do an honor system. If an item sits for over a week after the person inquires about it without any other takers then the person can get it....

Example
Got freebee on 6/5
I see something I really could use on 6/20... I post "2nds" in the thread. This means if know one else grabs it within a week of my post I can grab it\

You can only post "2nds" once a month.

Also another thing I would like to do is allow the karma giver to choose his method of giving. They can either go the typical 1st com 1st serve or they can spice it up with things like...

random drawings, guess my number, or who can post the thing that makes you laugh the hardest.

Since it is a free item people are offering to others I feel the giver should be able to decide who gets/wins/earns the item

Why make rules? Just get the giver decide.

There should just be an expectation that if you try to claim a lot of items, it's okay for someone giving something away to say "nah, I'd rather wait and let someone else have a crack."

The reason I was thinking rules is because you know how some people are around here. I swear they must sit on the BST section and hit refresh every 3 seconds all day and seem to be the first post on every other item lol.

I want everyone to get a chance to stick their hand in the pot

I like the giver to be able to choose who gets it based on whatever system they want....

True, true. Maybe something as simple as a 24 hour delay before an item goes to anyone?

Tough problem to solve.

Thats why letting the giver decide his method is the best way. They can state their own requirements for timeframes. Me personally I am going to have fun with it while trying to spread the wealth.

I feel this would be a good thing for the community. Money for most of us is tight right now and our hobby isn't the cheapest one you can have. I really think it will also promote giving/helping in the laser community. It will also help people like me who have ran out of room to put stuff but feel it would be a waste to throw away (and get my gf off my back lol) but it will also give people that good feeling when you make someones day ;)
