People would probably say im "Stealing" this but i dont see it stealing, i see it adding a feature which any internet website or forum can support.

I think it would be cool if this site had a Java IM Chat.

Hehe... http://laserchat.org
Laserenthusiast did get the idea from us but it's not stealing as marianne gave permission.

(What I'm saying is it does, and has for longer than you or I have been members.)

silly me, i never knew about it. but i ment like on the home page, that way more people would see and log in. more people would chat, especially when you can see the conversation going on right there.

Yeah, if c0ld gets around to reading it, you think you could install a IRC app that you can access laserchat through? for people who havent been on it before, there are a few members on there at all times, including me. irc.ecnet.org:6667 #laserchat

bump.

cold i cant remember what you told me when i asked this... lol, but i think it's a good idea, as nikokapo mentioned, there would be the same threads over and over, and more users would use it than they would laserchat.org.

Plus, instead of posting in the "other" section when bored we can talk to eachother here!
im gonna make a poll now! ;D

would you guys like to have a live chat feature on the site, or just a link that opens a chat window and goes to #laserchat on irc?

i don't know where we would place a live chat on the site, we could put a link to one, or place the chat on the bottom i suppose

what would u guys like?

would it be OK if the live chat was not embedded directly in the site, but could be accessed by clicking a link that opened the chat in a new window?

Embedded chat would be better IMO, but if it is a problem window'd chat will do.

I'm going to say a link would be much better. Having the chat on the bottom on the page would really clutter up the page.

yes that sounds fine! as long as the link is noticable.

I am absolutely OPPOSED to a java chat built into every page... I absolutely DESPISE pages with embedded java apps. I would absolutely stop coming here if that was put in place.. it takes a good 30 seconds to load java on each page, during which time your browser is frozen and it slows your computer to a crawl. then it would have to log you in each time you visited a page, it would log you out each time you clicked a different page, and it would be a huge clutter wherever it was put.

As for the choice between an onsite chat or a java irc client, I'd go for the irc idea... This site is fairly popular, but I think it would stagnate if it were restricted to people who happen to be browsing the site at the moment... at least with irc, you can use your own client, you can be on it without being on the site, and it may draw people from other laser forums, or just general laser enthusiasts who happen to be on irc at the time. Also, I'm guessing a site-specific chat would be a liability, since it's hosted exclusively by the site, LPF would be responsible for moderating it, whereas if it were hosted offsite on some random irc server, LPF wouldn't be liable for its content.
Two good java irc clients that come to mind are JPilot and PJIRC.

That said, I don't really see the point. The forum allows PM's, and allows you to put MSN/AIM/ICQ links in your profile... I'm thinking a link somewhere to laserchat.org would be more than enough.

yeah, i think embedding a java applet would be a horrible idea too b/c of the lag

it would be more realistic to just have a chat link that opened a chat in a new window

if you all want to vote on the best option see this poll:

http://www.laserpointerforums.com/forums/YaBB.pl?num=1212953937

note, i definately will not embed java on the page. i would only put a link to a java chat in a new window, but personally i think the best option would be to have a separate chat in a new window (non java based)

like this:

http://deeptide.com/lpf/phpMyChat.php3

feel free to fool around with this chat i set up, if enough people like it ill just put a link on the top for it
