I disagree with how the forum Reputation system works.

That's actually a very idea-inspiring thought...

IDEA: No more "Negative reputation", and only positive reputation. If someone has a complaint due something very serious, such as getting scammed in a sale or something of that level, there can be a separate place for reporting those. Kind of like a "seller rating" or something people can look at if they need to know whether or not someone is trustworthy to deal with. That way, there would be no complaints regarding -Rep's, no more Rep wars, etc. If someone posts another unsafe picture as their avatar, the bad reputation can just stick with them by everybody having a negative opinion on them.

Once again, just an idea. Let me know what you guys think :p

Excellent post, your ideas are dead-on and I completely agree with them. I especially like the last sentence of the first paragraph, very well stated. :gj:

Try this on for size: getting -Rep'd multiple times for +Rep'ing Capn Dan after he took the picture down, both times by Vets. It's alright though, because once again it's all just little green squares on an internet forum :p

You're not the only one

Good to know this thread didn't turn into a giant flame war with -1's being tossed around like candy :yh:

-Chris

In a discussion you need to do more than just agree with and back up anyone else presenting the same view as yourself. You ignore any point against you and jump behind any post that agrees with you. Contrary to your apparent belief, this does NOT win arguments

You keep mentioning how good it is that this is not a "flame war." Were you hoping for one?

Peace,
dave

Hey Chris...
Just a heads up...
I'm starting to hear you whine... like another member that just got
banned.....:D

Jerry

Okay well now you have me thinking about editing/deleting that post, but then again I've already learned my lesson about "Altering the records" (thanks Dave :yh:). Besides you guys have already quoted it...

Sorry to come off as whining or complaining, and thanks for pointing that out. I really wouldn't like to come off with that kind of a tone because nobody likes to hear/see it and it can indeed get one banned. Also, excuse me if it isn't my place to ask, but does anyone have any info about that "another member that just got banned" and it happened? Since you compared his actions to mine, I'm eager to see what I can learn here in order to stay safe, and well... here. ;)

Dave, I'll be sure to take heed of your advice and focus more on addressing some of the other points that have been made (especially those that have an opposing perspective) and be more double-sided about the issue. Thanks for the heads up.

And no, I certainly was not hoping for a flame war. I mean even if it did happen, I would probably get creamed :p

I think lasersbee is talking about himself in a thread he implied he had been banned once, but i am not sure if this info is correct. So don't count it true untell proven i was just stating what i heard not saying its true.

Give me a break people! This is pathetic.

Why do you people care so much about some hokey number attached to your profile? Are you really naive enough to believe it matters much? Would you take it at face value for a monetary transaction, or as real reputation? Some dude could be a "funny guy" and get reputation that way; does that make his status any more valued than a person who provides valuable information to newbies who wouldn't affect his score even if they wanted to?

You know what I do when I see my rep score has changed? I go and see why the person decided to click the balance icon and take time to say something about me. Sure, I appreciate rep, but it's not about the numbers, but the gesture. How I weigh that gesture is based on what I know about you, which comment I was repped on, and the stated reasons you decided to rep me. The number below your name means nothing.

When I give rep, and that is very infrequently, it's to thank someone for their valuable service in a way that isn't just in a specific thread. It's not to bump up that person's score, trade rep, or make them thankful for the rep. Rather, it's just a personal gesture, and it doesn't even need to be acknowledged or noticed. If you're giving and taking rep because some forum number is important to you, you need to get a life.
