It appears that this thread (and all of your replies to it) all got DESTROYED by this P.O.S. new forum! So if you previously replied to my thread, please re-post it, so I can respond to your original comments accordingly.

If you're one of the many other ppl that had posted other threads and comments reporting bugs and feedback about this new forum since we all got forced over to it, it looks like all of your comments got "vaporized" as well, so you will also need to re-post all of that!

Luckily, when I saw how flaky this new forum software was acting, I had the foresight to do a better job at backing-up my work than this crappy new software apparently does, so at least all of the time I spent researching & writing this thread did not get wasted!

Following is my original post...

Bugs/Comments Noticed in New Forum Software -

1) General Section - at first it looked like posts for the last couple of days were missing from the General section! But then I found-out that if I clicked "Last Post", it then sorted the posts by date (was it displaying threads randomly for me before that???), and the missing posts suddenly appeared! As listing by date is the normal setting for the old forum, all sections should default to that sort order, to avoid confusion. It appears that the new forum is not reliably doing that for all sections?

2) Broken interthread "links" (i.e. - one thread references useful information detailed in another). Not sure that there is a way to fix this, but should keep old forum posts accessible, at least until people can fix the more recent links in their threads.

3) Broken inline image attachments - this is a MUCH more serious problem, as there is a WEALTH of valuable images which have been uploaded to this site by various members over the years. At a minimum, the original images directory should be kept, with migrated posts fixed so they display the images from the right place (optimum solution, of course, would be for attached images to all be migrated to the new forum system automatically)

UPDATE - this problem is worse than I realized, as even trying to click on the provided image link, instead of displaying the image, pops-up with a "Save As" dialog, forcing you to download the image to your hard drive instead of viewing it!

UPDATE, STATUS - PARTIALLY FIXED. New fix here -
http://laserpointerforums.com/laser_pointer_forums_3/forum/showthread.php?t=40188
now allows members to manually fix their own posts!
Automated Fix - Possible / Pending.

4) Fonts from previous threads being rendered incorrectly, such as intentionally teany-tiny fonts in older posts being displayed in letters an inch tall!

5) The fancy graphics backgrounds, big icons, 3-D graduated tone behind EVERY SINGLE THREAD AND POST, and gray-on-gray color scheme not only wastes a lot of vertical space (and thus limits how much information can be viewed at one time on-screen), but also makes the forum VERY difficult to follow/read for many of us with less than perfect eyesight! (Trying to read the contents of a post should not be used as an eye test!) This problem is increased by the large, very high-contrast options buttons, which have a natural tendency to draw the eye AWAY from the low-contrast post text. Can we come up with a skin that is less "fancy artistic effects", and more practical???
STATUS - PARTIALLY FIXED. New alternative styles now available, original style (skilltest) still buggy.

6) Many emoticons (smilies) in the original posts are not being rendered AT ALL. New forum should at least be updated to include all emoticon codes commonly used in prior forum posts, to prevent loss of meaning in the original posts.

7) Those symbols that ARE being rendered have very poor appearance (looks like they were made by a uncoordinated kindergartener with construction paper and a dull pair of scissors!) I suspect this is because of the bizarre background (see item #5 above), while the emoticon graphics were likely designed to be used with a more traditional background (such as white?)
STATUS - PARTIALLY FIXED - emoticons render OK when using new "Default Style".

8) Allowing at least read-only access to older forum posts, to see what is missing or needs to be adjusted - I understand the idea of switching the original forum into Maintenance Mode with a link to the new forum, to force everybody to switch-over, but doing so is preventing ppl from seeing what recent posts may need to be re-submitted to the new forum, as well as what needs to be fixed in their own threads (inter-post links, attachments, etc.) I would strongly suggest instead to leave the original forum active, so that ppl can make this transition smoothly.
STATUS - FIXED!!! :)

9) The "captcha" graphic required for getting your new password tends to be VERY hard to read (even for us humans!) This, combined with the multi-step process involved in getting a new password (even AFTER all that, instead of E-MAILing a temp password like many systems, that is just the first part of the process!) Requiring folks to remember what specific E-MAIL addy they originally registered with on LPF way back when (rather than just their nick), is also a problem. I understand that you may be limited by the system you are using, but all of this is likely to be a serious impediment to getting all of the members converted-over, especially given that you are forcing eEVERY SINGLE MEMEBER to go through this arduous process! Isn't there an easier way to do this?

10) Just tried to reply to somebody's thread. Having to click a cryptically labeled "QR" button, before being able to post a quick reply in the text box at the bottom of a thread, is counter-intuitive, to say the least!

11) Hey, were are all the buttons for post enhancement options??? (inline smilies, fonts, sizes, bold, alignment, multiple quotes, images, lists, tables, colors, highlight, etc., etc.) All of this graphics crap on the screen killing our eyeballs, but we can only post in plain text???

12) Members online - I miss having this easily visible on the home page, but am more concerned that when ppl go to view this, they get to see each forum member's activities in explicit detail! (i.e. - user "x" is currently changing their password, user "y" is reading this specific thread, user "voyeur" is watching what everybody else is doing, and user "z" is shifting his g/f's location to prepare for insertion in the "reverse cowgirl" position! I'm not sure I like having everybody being able to watch your every move! Is there a way to fix this?

13) Lost reputation. Granted, I hadn't been around long enough to accumulate a lot yet, but I worked hard to get those few I had! LOL More importantly, are those with "negative" scores, as they served as a warning to forum members, especially before engaging in business dealings with such people! (We just had an incident come-up last night about a blog spammer that is using multiple ID's on LPF, and who had a negative feedback rating that helped clue us in as to the wisdom of purchasing from him - it would be a shame for members to loose that protection!) I think this is important enough not too loose, and this seems like a simple data import task (just an integer value for each user), that I would be willing to help with the process of migrating this data to the new system, if it would mean LPF not loosing this important data!

Finally, I would suggest leaving the original forum up in read-only mode (for the reasons already mentioned, as well as incoming links from Google and elsewhere!), with a clear reference/link to the new forum, and switch the default page for this web site to forward to a simple page with an explanation and two links - "Old Forum (read-only)", and "New Forum".

I would also suggest that you link directly to the forum (with instructions for how to reset your password for existing members), rather than only linking to the password reset page, as this is likely confusing the hell out of the lurkers, as well as non-members that have come here from the search engines, links or other sources.

That is just my feedback after fighting to get my password reset, and using this new software for only a few minutes - I am sure I will have more, once I have had a chance to use this a bit longer!

Response to Your Previous Replies

I was planning on responding to your replies here, but I was only able to briefly glance at your comments, before the forum "crashed and burned" and apparently destroyed everything in the process!

So I will try to answer them from memory, as best as I am able -

First off, to everybody that complimented me on this list, thank you! I was up 'till after sunrise researching & writing this - THAT'S how important I feel LPF is! I would thank you all in person, but now I don't know who you are! LOL

To the person who mentioned the "quote" problem - I am seeing this myself as well. As the discussion about this bug also got vaporized, I will add that to the list.

To the person who said they got an error msg while trying to edit a post with smilies, and that the msg seem to indicate that -

a) you are artificially limited to only a handful of smilies or inline images allowed in each post?!; and...

b) the system was actually making a separate database entry FOR EVERY SINGLE SMILIE IN EVERY COMMENT??!

I hope that I misread that, because that would be SERIOUSLY f'd-up if it was true!!!

To c0ld's reply about Bug #11 above, who suggested that I try the "Advanced" button - I tried that, and that didn't work either!

I will try to post some more bugs next...

Ah that explains things I wondered where all the posts had gone...... I will stop posting about problems for a while as, from what you say, it was a crash that caused everything to disappear, I did wonder....

That's my guess, anyway. The only official word we've had from on-high has been - "i ran into an odd issue but its fixed now"! (perhaps somebody wasn't anxious to fess-up that the new forum s/w just "vaporized" everybody's new posts???)

This certainly does not bode well for the long-term viability of this new forum software! (or LPF itself, for that matter, if this new forum is that unstable! I, for one, am not anxious to spend a lot of time & effort posting stuff that might get "destroyed" by a unstable database a few days later!!!)

Anyway, I figure there are probably a lot of ppl coming back after the crash that had posted stuff earlier, and going "WTF?!" - they deserved a "head's up".

Speaking of which, from my personal experience and just a guess only, but it appears that all of the new User Login Passwords & User Settings may have been destroyed as well, so everybody may have to go back through that whole "Reset Password" process, as well as reset any new custom User Settings (like "skins") - I'm already seeing ppl asking about these issues on other threads.

But to respond to your comment, NO, I would not suggest that you -

"stop posting about problems for a while"

as we need those sorts of posts (especially from well-respected older members), now more than ever!

(Just be sure to save a copy of what you write on your hard drive, just in case! LOL)

Well, I was about to post a comment on other errors I ran into before & after the crash, but I wanted to respond to your reply first! (before it disappeared! LOL)

More Bugs Discovered

More Bugs Discovered -

14. "Remember Me" box on login didn't work - when I re-started my browser & came back later, the forum did not remember who I was! (NOTE - this happened BEFORE the "crash & burn" Sunday, so this problem is unrelated to any loss of user data caused by that).

15. Despite the name, the actual "default" skin for lurkers is STILL the f'd-up 3-D black one. It also resets you to this when you login, unless you go into your user settings, and manually change it from "Use Forum Default" to the other skin.

16. Black skin - long forum sub-title in main forum list page extends down into next forum name, writing text on top of each other! (This was very visible in original (longer) description of Help forum before crash & burn caused a re-write). Gut feel is that this may be caused by a bug in that skin (CSS?), and may likely rear it's ugly head in other situations, such as psbly thread lists, or when using larger fonts?

17. For any previous posts that contain the quote (") character, the and "&" symbol (wow, that's a very commonly used char to get mangled!), the greater than >, less than <, and various other chars, the conversion process messes-up (thanks to Traveller for pointing that out!)

18. When trying to display certain threads, server "spaces out" and never responds! For example, when I tried to view this thread -

http://laserpointerforums.com/laser_pointer_forums_3/forum/showthread.php?t=20045

At first I thought that the web server had crashed, but then discovered I could view other threads, but not this one (even after repeated tries, with two different browsers!)

After waiting FOREVER, it finally came back with a -

"Database error

The Laser Pointer Forums - Discuss Lasers & Laser Pointers database has encountered a problem.
..."

Not sure if this has anything to do with it, but I did notice that this was the only new thread in this section that has an "attachment" icon on it in the thread list?

UPDATE - I just tried to view this thread -

http://laserpointerforums.com/laser_pointer_forums_3/forum/showthread.php?t=20047

and got a Connection Time-Out Error in Firefox!

Site now disabled completely, have to wait before I can even post this!

LATEST UPDATE - Forum access had been turned-off by Admin at that point, and stayed down for rest of day (until late Sun night).

Once I was FINALLY able to access site again, those two threads I had been trying to view had apparently been completely destroyed, as the links were now replaced with completely unrelated threads, in other sections of the forum!

It is coincidental, however, that the thread that now resides at that first link -

http://laserpointerforums.com/laser_pointer_forums_3/forum/showthread.php?t=20045

Is a PERFECT example of just how severe bug #2 I mentioned above is (just how useful would you say that thread is now???) - effectively DESTROYING some of the original content of this forum until it can be fixed!

19. Random Threads / Replies / Comments Destroyed, with apparently no hope of recovery??? This is about as severe an error as it gets!!! (Most decent software vendors will not even SHIP a product that still has this severe a bug!) The fact that this forum could not even go 24hrs after switching-over, before it crashed & burned, and even worse, DESTROYING EVERYBODY'S WORK IN THE PROCESS, would seem to indicate that this new forum software is NOT ready for prime time.

20. User Login Lost - I was unable to login with correct username / pass (not just with "Remember Me", but even manually). Had to go completely through arduous multi-step password reset process again, before I could log back into system.

21. Password Reset function forces you back into f'd-up 3-D black skin, even when already set to correct one.

22. Didn't Remember Some User Settings - some items (like time zone) intact, but others (like skin settings) had to be re-set.

23. Forum (Server?) clock way off (Not correct user time zone issue, but actual minutes!)
UPDATED, STATUS - FIXED! :)

Haven't had a chance to spot any new ones, these are just what I had noticed before the crash & burn this afternoon (along with the further bugs I noticed just trying to log back into system afterwards!)

I'm sure I'll have more to report, if/when I can ever get past all of these crashes, down-times & errors, and actually get a chance to read/use the forum for laser-related topics!!!

Hi, yes, quotes and for that matter, ALL special chars did not port correctly (" & < > - and so on).
Secondly, go to your User CP \ Edit Options and select wysiwyg as your default editor.
Third, it's not a p.o.s. forum - vBulletin is one of the best on the market.
Fourth, I like the grey skin, it's not that f'up so pick your favorite and be happy ;)

Less-critical problems that I have noted include:
  • white, non-underlined hyperlinks in skilltest cannot be seen against normal (white) text.
  • Avitars are 80x80
  • "Edited on" post tags come too early (~1min) and should be delayed for about 60min (imho)
  • A temporary (say, 60min) "delete post" option would be nice too...
  • Profile pic is limited to 100x100x64K.
  • I forget. (tbd... :p)

Who am I?

Umm...yeah...what happened to my name, PMs (including active tran$actions) and ability to SEND PMs? I haven't even been able to send to shadowvale or coldshadow.

I don't really maind about the other stuff (rep points, my previous posts), as I'm quite the noob.

But my name, dude. I liked it. And it's really my name. Now I'm just some cheap import:p

I've got my passport taped to my monitor right now, just for reassurance.

^I agree with you, traveller, that the forum is not a POS, but the migration to it from the YaBB forum has been a disaster. IMHO better planning would have been most beneficial. Maybe a beta test phase to work out any major bugs instead of just dropping us all here and hoping for the best??

Here are a few:

1. The reputation points seem to have been reset.

2. The URLs of the old forum simply redirect the user to the forum index. They should redirect to the new URL.

3. The "light" theme from YaBB isn't working.

#24 [CRITICAL] - Not only are the attached pictures from the older posts not displaying properly, but I discovered that for lurkers & visitors, they are PROHIBITED from even accessing them!

For example, log-out, and then try to view the pictures (or even make sense of) posts #1 & #8 in the following thread -

http://laserpointerforums.com/laser_pointer_forums_3/forum/showthread.php?t=25615

This is a MISSION-CRITICAL issue - meaning, if we can't solve it, then this forum software is not a viable solution for LPF! The reason is that, at any time I can remember, the overwhelming majority of ppl on this site have always been casual visitors / lurkers, outnumbering actual logged-in users by hundreds & hundreds! If we deny them access, we are basically telling them that they are not welcome here!

Trying New Post Editor

Traveller, I am trying-out your suggestion now!

Let's see...fonts...bold...SIZE...

OK, see a problem already - only lets you set old-school HTML "relative" sizes 1-7 (aren't those deprecated now?), not the more up-to-date, finer-controlled, and accurate "Point" sizes that YaBB could do!

Damn, YaBB is more high-tech than this - how old IS this software, anyway??!

Colors blue red...hmm, again, VERY limited, just a handful of preset colors, I know when they were talking about limiting even Craigslist ads to just a few presets, ppl were upset! Another negative for the new forum...

Smilies...just a handful of them??? And they don't even move???
Roll, you damn eyes, roll! LOL

Some other icons, but they appear limited to just the post as a whole?

Very few emoticons compared to YaBB, missing even standard ones like ;P, again, a negative for the new s/w.

Attachments - aside from the other problems already noted with, lets see...

lists limits for specific file types - does it only let you upload certain types of files??? Confirmed - Additional Options below said only allowed to attach certain file types!:( Did YaBB have this limitation?

Some byte sizes limits - most OK, but <20K for text files???

Picture pixel size limits - this is a potential problem - no way to upload a large picture as an attachment??? Even 800x600 is not allowed???:(
Hell, even 640x480 is too big???! Something is not right here!

Other various formatting options...but I'm not seeing any tables here???

I suppose we could try manually entering codes - but the codes are not even visible - it is just displaying the stuff with all the codes hidden???

Hmmm, overall, so far I would say that this is a SERIOUS DOWNGRADE to the posting features we had on the old site! :(:(:(:(:(

Edit -

Third, it's not a p.o.s. forum - vBulletin is one of the best on the market.

Damn, Traveller, how can you say that, when the post/edit features are so inferior to even YaBB???

There's another bug. It seems double quotes (") got converted to """ instead of the actual character.

Just found another one -

#25 [MODERATE] - When editing an existing post, no preview option! (Could make trying to fix a problems with a post more of a hassle)

Well Shadow... I must agree with Seoguy on a few of his points...
(I do understand that there is a necessary transition time involved)

My monitor is setup at 1024 X 768 and with the larger Post font that you
switched to last night... a single post (like Post #72 above) fills my
complete monitor screen....
It's like reading a roadside billboard from 2 feet away... very irritating...

[Edit] Even this post fills more than 100% of my monitor's screen...
and that is without my Sig..

The Emoticons are a bit of a problem... there are not enough of them to really
convey the intended meaning of a post. The lack of using Smilies has cause more
than one Flame War.. because a post's meaning was misinterpreted...
And when making a post... there are no smilies available unless you click on "Go
Advanced"...

@Seoguy.... I think P.O.S is a little overboard.... It's only been 3 days... I think
we can give it a while longer so the wrinkles can be ironed out properly....

Jerry
