Over the next few weeks I will be working on a test server to see if I can convert this forum to vBulletin.  I will keep you all updated with my progress.

This will be a complex and time consuming process but I will do my best.  I had tried this before but ran into a few issues, but I think I know how to correct them now.

Talk soon.

May I ask why? :) I thought YaBB was pretty good, what's better about vBulletin ?

Im not a member at many forums, but one thing ive noticed in these few, is the lack of a last 40 post page. If you make a switch, will there be this option still? I'd be lost without it.

And should we save our important PM's, or is there a backup for that?

Man thats a lot of copy and pasting :-/

hey guys, main reason is that yabb is flat file based and vB has a database structure. i should be able to add a 40 recent posts. i don't think any PM data will be lost.

note that this is just in testing phase and i might not even do it. nothing is being tested on the production server

in my most recent test conversion all data was successfully converted accept for 104 posts

the only annoying issue is that all members would need to use the 'forgot password' feature to get a new password sent to there email

the reason is yabb stores passwords as a one way hash, from which a password cannot be derived. even yabb cannot reserve the hash of a password, however, it can hash the plaintext the user enters as their password and verify in matches the hash in the file system. but it is impossible for vbulletin to know the password a user has based on the hash, and it doesn't use the same hashing for PWs hence all PWs need to be redone

so in conclusion i would need to send out an email to everyone reminding that it would be impossible to log in without resetting their pw with forgot pw feature.

sounds like a great idea! Vbulletin is one of my favorite forum layouts! So many more possibilities with Vbulletin, such as ratings! But will we still be able to keep our rep? how will this work out?

OR you could post it in big red letters above the sign in box.

true, good call mikeeey

the only other issue would be users that registered before email activation was required.. meaning some people might not be able to recv the email to reset their PW, but in that case i could have a link to PM me for help with manually PW resets.

I have to agree vBullitin is sure my favourite type of forum. It seems to have  the most most possiblitites for expansion and the most special features. Personally I don't really mind if my rep/post count get reset. Maybe with vBulliten we will beagle to have a chatbox too :D
rofl you said beagle ;D :p

EDIT: also vBulletin pwnz

The test Virtual Private Server hasn't been configured yet; I am still waiting for IceStorm to set that up. Will keep you all updated.
