hey everyone, i added a reputation system to the forum

now you can give positive/negative feedback to members about their posts. there are a lot of settings that i still have yet to fool around with for the reputation system, but feel free to test it out and let me know what you think.

to view someones reputation comments just click the little number in between the + and - under their username in a thread.

i figured it couldnt hurt to add this new feature to the site and it could motivate people to add more quality to posts.

hope you all find this feature helpful

regards,
-avery

I think it's a good feature! The only prob i see that could arise is abuse of it. Like someone making multiple account to add rep to themself. Maybe we could make it so you can only give/take rep from one account only once, so if i gave you rep now, i couldnt give it to you again?

Can the score go negative?

Would it be possible to split the reputation into:
1- Commenter Reputation (how much to trust the user's suggestions)
2- Seller Reputation (People who have successfully purchased from the user)

Just my 2 cents :)

well IMHO it should be only one, as a lot of members (including me) dont sell stuff (because they dont want to or they just cant). and having to see a number that stays at 0 (zero) all the time wouldnt just be cool.

but thats what I think :)

cheers :D

But sometimes a member has made a lot of good posts and someone wants to add rep to them. And I don't think anybody would make new accounts to add rep to themselves, but who knows, there ARE weird people out there!

++.

People adding new accounts to rep themselves is a possibility, along with 'business partners' repping each other continuously. As with post count, higher reps may or may not indicate all-around quality posters. Limitations that may help, as have been stated: one rep point per user per user, 50 or more posts (and/or a signup time delay) and to give rep.

Yeah, it really comes down to what c0ld can code, or what he can do with the add on. Overall i think its a good idea, i can see already who the bad and good members are!

i can set it up so users cant give rep unless they are a certain level:

Class 4 laser x 0 5000
Class 3B laser x 0 1000
Class 3R laser x 0 500
Class 2M laser x 0 250
Class 2 laser x 0 100
Class 1M laser x 0 50
Class 1 laser x 0 -1

right now i have it set so you need to be at least 'class 1m' or 50 posts to give reputation

do you think this makes sense or should i increase the amount

i can also set the amount of minutes a user needs to wait before adding more reputation to the same person. this is set to 360mins now

please let me know what you think

note that i cant really modify the reputation feature b/c i dont know the perl language and i dont want to risk messing up the modules

That sounds pretty good. 50 posts should be a decent threshold.
If you want to skew the rep more to the number of people who find a post useful, increase the minutes a user needs to wait before adding more reputation to the same person to a few days or longer (if possible? that's a lot of server tracking).

great work!

50 posts is a nice number.

but do we ALWAYS have to comment on why would we want to give a +1 rep to somebody? what if i just like the good work he/she has done on a thread, do i have to justify it?

From the looks of a few people it allready has. When I see buddies adding rep to each other in a circle it sorta defeats the purpose of a rep system

Too bad it has allready started with some people allreay giving multiple rep to buddies and ganging up on anybody with - rep if they disagree with a post or a person they dont like gets more rep than they do. Nobody should be able to rep a person more than once.
The problem as well is like E-bay you give negative for a good reason and the give you negative in retaliation.
It was a nice idea but kinda pointless.

Whoa... you mean you can rep someone more than once? That's not right. I'd agree that it could lead to as lot of abuse that way, with spammers joining in pairs to rep each other into false legitimacy.

I've never liked the feedback aspect of eBay either. When I first started lurking here, it was quite apparent whom the respected members were by the thank you's and respects paid by other members in the threads. It took a bit of research, but I learnt who's opinion to trust pretty quickly.

This may sound new-agey, but what if you could only give positive Rep, and only once? Then those that deserve it will garner credibility slowly with good deeds and shared knowledge, while those who don't contribute much (for whatever reason) will be seen as having lower credibility with the forum.

It would be a bit less vulnerable to abuse that way, and c0ld can always knock someone down if the vox populi demands it. ;D

Just a thought, CC

c0ld can remove rep from users if he's see's it as a fake, he's got all the IP addresses and can see who has multiple accounts. I think making it so you can only rep a member once would be a good idea, if possible.

I think the reputation should be positive only. That way it will be a way of saying "nice job" to helpful members and people won't abuse it as much by giving multiple bad rep scores to forum members they don't like.
