not specificaly for defense, but I do like having a couple of pointers on hand just in case, mostly for pointing opportunities. But I think, if confronted by someone, the solid bright beam of the 445 combined with a warning that I can blind them instantly should be enough to deter most drunken idiots lol. More chance some drunk guy will just try to pick a fight than an actual mugging.

To answer the OP question, unless it has a BIG ass handle on it so I can beat someone down with it, I don't carry a laser for self-defense.. there are MUCH better methods of self defense than a laser, and most of them don't require you to carry anything at all.

figures you live in california... heres a thought, when the UK made guns illegal, gun crime went up! quite significantly in some places (as much as 5 fold... ref: http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/arti...89-decade.html )

if you make guns illegal, only criminals will have guns...

owning a gun does not make you a criminal, it just makes you less likely to be a victim

+1

If guns cause crime, than police are the biggest criminals of all. In states where concealed carry has been made legal (unless you are mentally ill or have been convicted of a crime) crime of all types, but especially violent crime, has gone down significantly. The reason is that there are more decent, responsible people in society than criminals, so when everyone can be legally armed, criminals know that committing a crime is a high-risk proposition. But in places where gun ownership is illegal or heavily restricted, such as Washington, DC or Chicago, IL, the decent, responsible people don't have guns because they are illegal, and the criminals have guns anyway because they are criminals and don't care about laws. And so violent crime in those places flourishes because law-abiding people are easy pickings for the scum.

Consider this: when was the last time you heard of someone committing a violent crime at a gun show? If guns cause crime or are mostly used for criminal purposes (which they aren't, less than 2% of all guns manufactured have ever been used in the commission of any crime), then gun shows, with hundreds of people and thousands of guns in a single building, should be the most wretched hives of scum and villainy on earth. But strangely, the people at gun shows tend to be some of the nicest and politest people you'll ever meet. This is due in no small part to the fact that if anyone tried to commit a rape, assault, or robbery at a gun show, they would quickly find themselves looking down the barrels of dozens of guns held by law-abiding people unwilling to allow the deed to continue.

A self-portrait...

Guns don't cause crime, criminals misuse guns to commit crimes. The antidote gun crime is to put guns in the hands of decent, law-abiding people to tip the balance of power in favor of the good guys. In its simplest form, this is the function of the police, but guns in the hands of decent, mature, mentally competent civilians have the same chilling effect on criminal activity, because it makes it harder for criminals to know who they can get away with victimizing. Muggers don't like it when Granny pulls a mini-Glock out of her purse instead of her wallet...

And to answer the OP's question, the only lasers I would use for self-defense purposes are attached to various firearms I own.

Unfortunately, conceal and carry permits are now available in missouri. So every idiot that can come up with $200 is walking around with a hand gun.

It makes me nervous to see someone even wearing a firearm, forcing me to carry one myself.

This is bad because simple confrontations that would of ended in bruises can now end in death. I don't support the conceal and carry laws, but feel unsafe without one now because of it..

wow really??

when they passed the concealed carry law in Florida they were calling it the "gunshine state" proclaiming doom and gloom and everyone would be shooting each other etc...

what happened? the exact OPPOSITE

99. APPENDIX II - Concealed Carry Reality vs. "Gunshine State" Fantasy (talk.politics.guns Official Pro-Gun FAQ)

theres some really strong anti-gun cool-aid out there apparently...

honestly I think its un-American to NOT own a gun

also you should never pull a gun for a confrontation... and never, ever pull out a gun to scare someone, if you pull out your gun it should be because you are 100% certain you are going to fire it... and even then, most people would think about it first...

again, the people that are going to be out killing everyone are the people that are going to be doing it regardless of the laws (hello, they are CRIMINALS, if they dont care about robbing you at gun point/raping you etc, chances are they are not going to care about a gun possession violation)

Since I know you're not a troll, and I don't think you're a moron I think you're just afraid... Most likely you've never even used a gun, and have a horribly twisted understanding of them. If EVERYONE had guns violent crime would almost disappear, as muggers, murderers, rapists etc. would get shot in about 5 minutes.

Are you implying every idiot with $200 didn't already have a gun? That's about the price of a jimenez .22... Making it legal just means that sensible citizens can carry as well.

As for me, I carry a 4" folder from S&W, they won't let me carry a handgun yet I have all sorts of stuff I could carry, tasers, pepper spray, flare/cracker guns, ka-bar etc. but fortunately I've never had to carry more than a knife as I've lived in pretty safe places my whole life. That will change soon, and I'm not sure I would trust a laser to defend me. I think a tazer and a knife is a good bet, my tazer makes a scary sound. I jumped the first time I heard it LOL.

Default Re: Do you carry your laser as self defense at night?

you know what DOES scare me? everyone that saw the WL arctic being advertised as a light saber and spending the $200 they could have spent on a gun they know is dangerous on a class IV laser that they don't realize just how dangerous it is...

I am surprised there would be such an anti-gun sentiment on a place dedicated to laser pointers (which lets face it, all you guys have pointers >5mW which is techincally illegal) and it would not be a stretch or even that surprising if they all got classified as weapons (hello Australia?)

I'm thankful that they aren't treated like guns-otherwise most of the people on this site would be committing a felony by building one (or in some places, owning one).

So I guess you must break out in hives every time a police officer is near you? A police officer is nothing more than a non-criminal responsible person who is not mentally ill carrying a gun, who gets paid to apprehend criminals. Police have more legal training than the average civilian so they have a more detailed understanding of what is legal vs. illegal behavior, but there is no magic difference between a police officer and a civilian when it comes to handling firearms safely and responsibly, or the effect an armed civilian has on violent criminal behavior vs. an armed police officer.

BTW, you can get a gun legally for a lot less than $200. The Raven .25 auto sells for around $80, and you can find used .22 revolvers for less than $100 without trying too hard. They're not the most effective self-defense tools, (I personally wouldn't use anything less than 9x19mm with hollow points for serious punk repellent), but they are far more effective than a 1-watt laser, and significantly cheaper. It's a lot easier to hit center-of-mass/torso than the eyes of a moving target, especially when under stress.

actually you would be surprised how little training they have on this... police offers generally arrest you for things they *think* are illegal, the rest is for the courts to decide... most police officers actually know very little about the law
