K thanks for the tip, but aren't their aftermarket fans available that draw upon console power? Getting banned would suck. They'll ban you if you power up the unit with out a drive connected too.

look for something called a nyko intercooler at your local gamestop or other game store. the usually cost ~20$ but its the wisest investment you can make for a 360.

you can also put a piece of tape or cardboard over the top of the HS so all the air is drawn all the way through the heatsink.

K, so it's been months since I've fixed my Xbox but I was still weary of spending money on new games. I feared it might break again. Well it's worked perfectly fine since. So I figured "what the hell, I'll buy Halo Reach" after all I've been looking forward to it's release for a while. I stop at Gamestop on my way home and sixty bucks later I've got the game. I get home and turn on the system, dashboard comes up fine. I'm thinking, "great, this is gonna be fun!". I put in the game and.... freeze

SON OF A BITCH!!!!!!!

And now I have the RROD... again.

Hey Tony don't worry man. Just overheat it again. Remember the solder cracks after time. That lead free shit.

Try it again and let us know

Yeah I will, I'm just busy and it's a pain the the a$$!

It's a shame that such a crappy console has all the best games. I do have a PS3 now but I mainly use it for blu-ray movies. The only game I have for it is God of War III, which was epic!

I like them equally, I own both, I sell both at BestBuy. I used to like ps3 a lot more, however there's some great games on 360 that make them equal again.
PS3's MOVE just came out yesterday, that seems pretty cool, but Kinect is gonna be WAY better. The Ps3's eye is old technology, 4 years old, while the 360's Kinect sees you in 3d with both of it's cameras, it's much cheaper for up to 4 people (compared to buying 4 controller sets for the ps3) and will be able to register more than the move (which is limited to the glowing loli pop). Unfortunately Kinect doesn't come out till November, so until then I'll be playing with the MOVE on BestBuy's display.
I just wish they'd make a game that really shows the ps3's full potential. Heavy rain sure looks nice, but they need something REAAAALY good. Not sure what yet...

I have a couple of big AC computer fans that I'll position behind the Xbox from now on. I have them on my desk next to my Xbox intending to use them but I didn't use them all the time.

Did you use those fans you mentioned all the time since you repaired it last?

Warranties (on all items) should be required to be 5-8yrs, too many companies slide by with shoddy work all the time.
Heck even if RRoD is really caused by lil green men who are just Really fond of pretty red lights, no way I'd ever let Microsoft off the hook.

Well they've fixed it since then. A few new models came out and with hdmi.

Xplorer877 there is something else you can do that will prevent it from getting the RROD. You do the xclamp fix. X-Clamp-Fix - X-Clamp-Fix DIY Kit X-Clamp-Fix
Replace it with these screws and it prevents the motherboard and processors from moving around which causes cracks in the solder joints. And then over heat it once more.
It's virtually a permanent fix

Yeah I've seen jay, they've got some nerve charging 15 bucks for a few screws and washers. No, I just went to the hardware store and got what i needed to do that fix.

I removed the x-clamps completely, and just used the bolts and washers. The idea behind how it works is pretty good. By removing the clamps you're redistributing the pressure to the four corners of the chip rather than the center. Like I said it worked for a few months.

Also I'm giving the fans 12v instead of 6v, so it's loud as hell now. And I added another fan on the side of the console positioned right above the heatsinks. That fan blows in and the stock ones blow out, so I've GOT airflow.

IMO the real problem is that as the chips cool down the board contacts, like any other material when it cools, and THAT is what breaks the joints. That constant expanding and contracting, over time, is what does it.

Yeah I know the kit is over priced. I never bought it. Got my own as well.

It's that shitty solder they used. What were they thinking? That some kid was going to open their xbox and lick the motherboard?

So did you get it working again? I got an xbox that needs the heatgun fix but just haven't got around to it yet. You might want to do that too.

No I haven't messed with it yet. I've been busy. I might get into it tonight though. I don't think I'll have any problems getting it working again. It's a pretty straight forward fix. I just hope it doesn't happen frequently. Needless to say, Reach will be the last game I buy for my Xbox. I don't wanna get another console. There are so many things on my "want" list right now. LOL

You and me both.

I like the PS3. I bought myself a cheap disc read error one on ebay and replaced the laser ... it works perfectly. About 150 dollars I spent on it in total.
