I've heard stories in the past, but didn't think it would ever happen to me since I don't play very often. I just got done buying Halo3 and Halo Wars and was in the process of passing the final level on Halo3 when it happened....The Ring of Death.:yabbmad:

Has anyone had this happen to them? I have to check and see if it is still under warranty but I really don't wanna send it off to MS and have to wait the 3-4 weeks for my replacement. I was wondering if anyone on here has attempted the home version fix/mod? I see it costs $30 for the instructions and a few dollars more for the components needed.

Should I try this myself? Or should I pay to have it done?

(I don't want to harvest the diode and make a laser...And I don't want to blow the money for a PS3,not yet anyway)

i can help you or do it for you but you need to check if its under warranty. if it is send it back. if not turn on your console and HOLD the connect button. press the eject button a total of 4 times paying attention to which rings flash and let me know what it does.

p.s. ive already got some x-clamp kits here if you need one.

Yeah never open your xbox under warranty. I've done the x-clamp fix on a couple of xboxes and it's turned out ok. Oh btw never buy instructions, you can get them for free.

Yeah call, wait the few weeks it's worth it than rather brick your 360. Lol My friend showed me the differences between even the heatsinking between the older 360's and the newer ones and it's funny.

First it was 90nm 90nm for graphics and cpu I think, then 90 65, 65 65, 65 and 65 on one chip? And what next? The power supplies also went from something like 140w to less than 120. I have the second revision but wish I could buy the new xbox whe it comes out ( unofficial better cooled one).

And I have a 5 year warranty on my elite, weird.

the only difference is that theres a heatpipe attached to a smaller extension. the cpu heatsinks are made of either copper or alum. the new gou heatsinks all look the same with the heatpipe though. i put a fan in the plexi window for my 360 that blows straight down on the extension and the stock fans pull the air through the cpu heatsink helping cool that as well.

Thanks guys! I am gonna check and see if is under warranty, or if the toll free number will work, if it's not.
If that doesn't work, I'll be getting ahold of you, Drew.
Thanks again.

I just got done repairing one here at the hospital I work at. Here's a link to the proper tutorial.. This method works great, but you will most likely have to make some fine adjustments to the heatsinks once you're finished. You'll see what i mean when you finish the tutorial.

I've done the home fix many times for my friends and a bunch mods to mine so it doesn't see the red ring (12v fans, full speed all the time, loud). It's not worth it, send it in, you can have one that lasts 2-5 months max or you can get a brand new one that lasts years, M$ won't send refurbs anymore because they all break to fast, I can almost guarantee you a new console if you send and wait.

I keep the fans on 100% on my non fixed one, for safety. No one needs to go 100% on fans. No heat gun huh, how long has it lasted so far?

You can do the towel trick. It has worked for me. Just wrap your xbox in a towel and turn it on for 5 minutes. Then it should work.
