Towel tricks suck, they are dangerous for other components in the xbox. If you are serious then do the team hybrid fix(google it) and use a heat gun as well.

I keep the fans on 100% on my non fixed one, for safety. No one needs to go 100% on fans. No heat gun huh, how long has it lasted so far?

2 months so far.. I work for a children's hospital, so it gets used constantly. The fix involved removing the X-clamps holding the heatsinks in and drilling holes for screws that fit the threads on the heatsinks. Use Arctic Silver thermal compound and adjust the heatsinks carefully for a good heat transfer. If it doesn't work the first time, recheck your screws and adjust as necessary. It takes a few tries to get it right but once you do it is a permanent fix. No heat gun required.

Thanks guys for all the support. This definitely sucks. I called the number JohnLawson gave me and it instructed me to register online, where I was informed my warranty expired.
I called the 800 number again and this time waited to talk to a rep to dispute my warranty. I was able to get a one time fix for free :)
Thanks John!

Edit: They didn't ask how long I owned the xbox when I called the 800#. I was told the online registration shows an "error" message (then it tells you it will be $99 to fix it). A 15minute phone call is totally worth it.

I know how to do it all I just have better results when I heatgun it before I mess with heat sinks. Look up team hybrid, it is by far the best fix for the 360. Remember the more the xbox stays on or off if you use it almost never, the better, often on off cycles will cause the heating and cooling of the solder causing it to eventually crack again, makes sense to you right? Lead free solder sucks for cold solder joints but M$ must use it because children are going to be using the 360, it must be a law or something.

I do understand, but I have my reservations about whether it really has anything to do with solder. At no point, even with a heat gun or a towel, would the temps in there get even remotely close to that required to melt solder, especially lead-free solder. Cracked solder would only be able to be fixed if it was melted again somehow.

I've had to send back 3 xbox 360's so far as an owner, ROD everytime. Everytime, I call microsh*t and they send me a box, I put the xbox in the box, I ship to them, they send a new one or a repaired one.

No. Big. Deal.
