Just ran out of AA so I decided to be smart and use my 14500 3.7v because they're the same size.

Put them in and it didn't work at first, so I kept the xbox button down and it came on, then started to vibrate LIKE MAD , like more than it was ever designed to, so I threw it on the floor (I could barely keep hold of it)

Next thing I know a puff of smoke comes out and a cracking sound.

Batteries are all right thank god.

you decided to be smart by putting 8.2v into a spt designed for 3v. :thinking:

The idea probably would have worked if you used a single 14500, not 2 in series..

Should you try this again, id make it with a couple of connectors and a diode
like a 1N4001 to drop the single batteries voltage a tad.

When we moved into our new house, the thermostat for the furnace used 2x AA
and had to change batteries every couple of months.. I set it up with a single
14500 and the diode, made 2 'packs' and now only need to charge the cell instead
of constantly forking out $$ for alkalines..

First time poster here. Been lurking here for a bit, just to get the lay of the land, and you all seem to have a great crowd here.

Misanthrop: That's unfortunate about your controller, but hey live and learn, right?

I've let the "magic smoke" out of my share of electronic components over the years, rendering them useless.:( I've tried to come up with an effective way to gather the smoke and get it back into said device, theoretically restoring normal operation, but to no avail. The research continues.........:tinfoil:

Aah well......

Yeah these 18650, 14500, 10440 and other cells we use in our lasers are little power houses, sorry about your loss;)!

Wrong subforum. Thread should be moved.

What exploded its probably a cap or something. If you overvolt, then they start going mad.
Resistors do that too.
