differences i've noticed between Florida and Missouri

1. Wildlife has no care for the humans. I have fed seagulls, squirrels, black birds, and some weird looking bird in the parking lot of a gas station. They don't seem to fear humans at all. In missouri, Someone would of hit the squirrel with a big stick and eaten it for dinner.

2. Traffic & law enforcement - Drivers are Fing nuts. I've been cut off about 30 times already and have had people in the opposite lanes made u-turns right in front of me, even going up onto the side walk, around a light pole to complete their u-turn. Law enforcement is nowhere to be seen. I've seen 1 police officer since I have arrived and population density here is immense. It seems like every time i go through a traffic light, someone decided to shift the lanes over about 6 feet, so your riding on the white line when you cross the intersection...wtf!

3. Income - Everything just seems nicer. The majority of people drive "good" cars. The roads are much nicer than in missouri as well. It seems like Florida just has much more money in general. Perhaps I just live in a poor state and never realized it? In my town, only about 1/3 of cars are 2000 year model or newer...I have a 2008 and a 2010

4. gardening - Seriously? It looks like the entire city of orlando and the surrounding suburbs employ 1000's of gardeners to keep the sidewalks and center medians perfect. A street light and palm tree ever 3 feet with perfectly mowed grass.

It's entirely possible that the crazy ass drivers are all tourists. I have heard more foreign languages here than english. LOTS of russian and french people, As well as Ontario license plates.

Ya, that's quite a phenomina in Ontario. Basically all the old people with even moderate money, keep a winter home in Florida. They'll go down for most of the deadly winter months (December to February generally). I forget the name for it, but it's so common that there's a word for those people (something to do with migrating birds, but I'm drawing a blank).

It used to be popular when the US dollar was worth 50% more than the Canadian. Now that we're on par (or generally more valuable) I can only imagine how much more intense the south-ward winter migration must be.

I know at least 10 people in the Canadian Sault Ste Marie area that went down to Fl for the winter. It's REALLY popular. I live 20mins from Michigan's Sault Ste Marie btw. What's odd is the Canadian Soo (that's how we say and reference SSM up here) is SO MUCH NICER than the Michigan one.

It's the same thing with Niagara Falls NY vs Niagara Falls ON. The American side is dirty, trashy, and sketchy. The Canadian side is dirty, trashy and sketchy too, but a little bit less.

Drivers are Fing nuts.

When I lived in Orlando, at least once a week I'd see a motorcylce on one wheel zipping down I-4. Amazing really, I couldn't care less about what they'd do to themselves, it's the folks around them I worry about, including me!

Missouri state income tax = 6%
Florida state income tax = 0%

Damn right! It's in the state constitution that we Floridians will never have a state income tax.

Been here in central Fl my whole life (48 years). If it wasn't for having to go to work, I wouldn't leave the house. PS: I work at Disney.

This is because for years tourists feed them at restaurants, theme parks, ect - and they have evolved to generally not fear humans. This has become a problem now, especially when being mobbed by seagulls when trying to enjoy a meal outside.

2. Traffic & law enforcement - Drivers are Fing nuts. I've been cut off about 30 times already and have had people in the opposite lanes made u-turns right in front of me, even going up onto the side walk, around a light pole to complete their u-turn. It seems like every time i go through a traffic light, someone decided to shift the lanes over about 6 feet, so your riding on the white line when you cross the intersection...wtf!

This seems to be a problem everywhere, people do stupid things when they think nobody else is around or watching them.

You must be in a retirement community(?) The roads are generally nicer because they don't have the seasonal cold weather that we do here in the midwest. Because it never gets too cold, the concrete & blacktop doesn't expand and contract with temperature changes & doesn't need nearly as much maintenance as somewhere that actually deals with winter. It lasts a lot longer before the cracks & potholes start setting in.

4. gardening - Seriously? It looks like the entire city of orlando and the surrounding suburbs employ 1000's of gardeners to keep the sidewalks and center medians perfect. A street light and palm tree ever 3 feet with perfectly mowed grass.

You're by Disney, everything looks good within 10 sq miles of that place.

Very true, and most of the locals are retirees. I was just down there & noticed the abundance of foreigners as well - there were also a TON of folks from Brazil in the mix, portuguese was spoken everywhere :beer:

I just caught this show for the first time in years, and I must say I thought it was AWESOME with 1 major letdown. The fire, the lightshow, the projections on the giant globe were siiiiiick, very impressive & well worthwhile BUT the main reason I was excited to see it - which was the lasers of course left a lot to be desired. I don't know if they do the same illuminations show each time, but lasers were minimally used & they only had 2 445/532nm lasers that rotated between blue & green shooting out from 2 different towers across the lake. My 1W 445 handheld was way brighter & I had to restrain myself from not shining it during the show because their lasers were so dim. Here's a few shots to give you an idea......

Here's a shot of my 1W 445 hitting the dark sky just before the show started. Before doing this I asked 2 Illuminations employees if I could (I was talking to them about lasers, showing them my 1W handheld & explaining why I'd come for the show, ect). Both of them were interested to see how bright it was & were impressed. They also asked me not to shine it during the show, which I wasn't going to do anyways b/c it's disrespectful & interrupts the show. In short, I think they could've used a few more lasers but overall the show was great! I left a note in the suggestion box on the way out, it read '♥ IT, NEEDS MORE LASERS' :beer:

We have state income taxes AND federal income taxes as well as county/city income taxes in some cases. All added together, it's about as high as yours.

Yep, contrary to what most Canadians believe, Americans generally pay almost as much income tax as we do. They typically do better on the sales tax front though.

For me
federal = 15%
State = 5%
Total tax on income = 20%

On top of that I pay 9.75% on retail purchases throughout the year

Why is my state broke?

Peace,
dave
