What about Greece and Korea? 0-2... ROFL suck it up Greece!

Not a good start is it! Lack luster and boring play from Greece. No flare. Early days though...

Well, we say "Fútbol" here, but if I say Football then I'm gonna get told it's "Soccer".

Anyway, I don't hate the sport... I just hate the fans :)

Not in this thread Niko! :)

Also, offense not taken. Actually I do not condone the fact that they are happy for having cheated to win some cup and then bragging about "not getting caught in time".

I'm glad about that. Because none was meant. :thanks:

greece did appear to toss a stinkup today, the first goal was timid

im cheering for USA, if they don't make it, i want Algeria... 3rd favorite is cameroon

I think Cameroon have a special little place in the hearts of a lot of people. Sometimes they seem to play way above their station but just don't know why.

Of course you'll need a back up for a team to support soon eh Avery? :eg::poke::na::p:wave::D Good luck tonight!!! (You'll need it! ;) )

OMFG the vuvuzeals are pissing me off on TV.... imagine being there!!!

Vuvuzelas annoy World Cup fans - World Cup 2010 - Fox Sports

The quicker we see the end of those the better. I was hoping that at some different stadiums they may not have them but I bet they've flooded the market with them at next to no price. I hate them too!!! More will be said about these I think.

Thanks all,

Let's keep it going.

USA! USA! USA!

The only correlation between those years are that they do not fall within the same century!

The one I heard was, "Rule Britannia"...

What a turn up!

Avery, looks like you had the luck after all.

Simple goalkeeping error. Shouldn't have happened. He wasn't behind the ball. Overconfidence? Maybe. He hadn't had all that much to do so perhaps his concentration was just not there. Sort of made up for it later on with an instinctive save but it wasn't enough for this game.

Still, successful English World Cup tournaments have often started in a non-plus way. 1966 began with a draw in the opening match.

Well done USA. Let's see what the next games bring.

The inaugural edition of the FIFA World Cup was in 1930 held in Uruguay so I completely missed the relevance of these dates the first time I looked!

In case anyone else missed it...

1783 - American War of Independence
1812 - War of 1812! Probably can call this one a draw but did confirm once and for all America's independence. Some naval victories over the British though.
1950 - Obviously a one off!
2010 - Another draw...

Thanks, I just noticed the typo updating the score. Maybe a Freudian slip? Corrected now...

Shame about the sending off. Don't think that deserved a red card at all. Other similar challenges didn't even get a yellow.

Has to be said that Australia were outclassed but it's Germany so no team should feel too bad about that. They almost always start well. Australia had a few chances; just couldn't convert. Never gave up though.

[EDIT: Shameful behaviour from one spectator already at the Argentina V Nigeria match. Only thing I can say is at least it wasn't blue!!! Another excuse given to the regulators! http://www.guardian.co.uk/football/2010/jun/13/laser-fifa-maradona ]

Seems most are content to go through the first match with draws.

Bit of rain in the Italy V Paraguay match though eh! Torrential at points it seemed to me.

I'm kind of glad to see the refs using their cards to keep things under control, (even penalising for diving which is only a good thing), but I can't help thinking it might have an undue influence on the final outcome. The Mexican ref is particularly fond of his!

Definitely Germany showing early promise. This from an essentially young and untried team too. Proved very polished yesterday.

Next England match is very conveniently kicking off at 19.30 our time on Friday. I suspect there will be more than a few knocking off early from work!
