What are some good books you've read?

The house of the scorpion was the only book I would look forward to reading after work :crackup: seriously it was an awesome book

I can second that, I haven't read it in ages but House of the Scorpion is still fresh in my mind. I can't remember if it's been mentioned in this thread or not (I don't think is has) but The Last Horseman (or something very similar) is a very, very good book.

I read it about a year ago and the last horsemen was oh my gawd so long ago lol

I finished reading a Game of Thrones a few weeks ago and you're quite rights, it was excellent! I also just saw the first episode of the HBO series they made based on this book. It wasn't bad. I liked it alot. They left alot of stuff out, as they always do, but they got most of it right.

I couldn't miss it... tonight I'll see the second episode
I find it nice, and although at first glance, the actors do not always seem adeguate, after a while you appreciate the choices.

Have you noticed the similarity between Jaime Lannister and Prince Charming in Shrek?

I think I'm gonna read Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy next. I liked the movie and everyone says that the book was batter.

So,

One of my favorite series of books are:

Ender Series by Orson Scott Card (Highly Recommend if Science Fiction Fan)

Books in order as follows:
Ender's Game
Speaker for the dead
Xenocide
Children of the Mind

These are the main books featuring Ender Wiggen as the main character, but there are plenty of other books that take place in the Ender Universe. Other books feature the same plot line but told through a different character called bean. This alternate narrative is called Enders Shadow series.

STRONGLY RECOMMEND ANY OF THESE BOOKS!!!!!!!!!

Game of Thrones was soooooo good!!!!!!
They followed the book very well IMO.

I really can't believe anyone hasn't recommended Jim Butcher.

IIRC there are 6 books in the Codex of Alera series. Very fast paced read.

The Desden Files series is even better IMO, although some like it dome don't. The first book is the weakest in the series so I suspect many don't make it through it.

Also he has already been mentioned, but Timothy Zahn is an excellent writer outside of star wars universe, his latest books are somewhat weak, but previous work is is excellent.

If you are a star wars fan, there are over a 100 books set in that series, I've been through pretty much all of them written prior to 2008.


Edit: I'm amazed how well the HBO series is following the book! Love the series, next book is out in July

Supposedly, they are making a movie out of this with John Travolta.

A "silly little Sci-Fi novelette", out of print, but you might be able to find a copy. "On Wheels" by John Jakes. If you like NASCAR and motorcycle gangs/clubs/ the Biker scene, it would probably be appealing. It's a dystopian novel; in the future of an over-populated over-industrialized America, a separate class of "road folk" live on the highways... all of the time, 24 hours a day, and they NEVER slow to less then a certain speed limit. If they ever do (in an accident, etc.), they have been known to have heart attacks or go insane.

(EDIT: DIDN'T mean to say that "On Wheels" is silly, I have the book and enjoy it. It's hard to say exactly what I meant by that. Also didn't mean to IMPLY anything about NASCAR or Biker people. It's easy to get misinterpreted over a forum, with no visual cues.)

I have the trilogy, "The Chronicles of Thomas Covenant: The Unbeliever". Although I haven't been in much of a reading mood for a while and didnt get to far. I'm still only on the first book, but it's very well written fantasy.

Two of my favorite books of all time, are Shel Silverstein's "Where the Sidewalk Ends" and "Falling Up".

And some other books off the top of my head that I enjoyed:

Yes, for these reasons, my advice is to see first the series and then read the books. The books add details to the series which is really good, on the contrary the books ruin the surprise.
