BRICK ALERT

How about doing an experiment, Trevor?

Whenever you think that a NooB is getting the bum's rush (or if you see their post first), you post a quick message telling them not to worry about the gatekeepers and then answer their question.

It is easy to try to make others change by complaining. It is hard to change ourselves. Don't complain. Act.

It is hard to cover all of the questions yourself. It gets tiresome very quickly.

People here seen to think that everyone deserves to be here and deserves respect. That is a wonderful sounding sentiment. However, it is not the reality. People do not "deserve" respect. Respect is earned. JakeGT is a prime example of moving beyond his "entitled" attitude and earning some respect here.

You seem to be worried about NooB's being run off. Why? Not every forum is a good fit for every person. This forum is no different. Some will fit in. Some won't fit in. Some will fit in for awhile. Some will leave after awhile.

We have >18,000 members. >5,000 unique visits every 12 hour period. In the last 24 hours, I have gone through 25 new members. That is 175 new members a week and 700 new members a month. How many NooB's have been "run off" this week? This month?

You seem to be focusing on the one or two new members a month that have problems and ignoring the 698 new members that join the forum with no issues .003 members have problems in fitting in. You are focusing on the .003 and asking the entire forum to change to allow that .003 to succeed.

How about focusing on the .997?

How about acting in accord with your feelings (and helping the .003) instead of asking others to change to accommodate your feelings?

To change the forum to help the 1 or 2, while taking the chance to alter a successful model is NOT worth it. Give up the .003 to maintain the health of the forum.

LPF has NOT gotten "meaner." The number of NooB's has just increased. With the increase in the number of new applications comes an increase in the number of those that will not fit into the culture.

If you feel bad for them, help them. They are your feelings. Take responsibility for them. Do not ask others to feel the same way. My personal belief is that after a very short time, you will fatigue as well. I actually believe that this thread is a reaction to you beginning to fatigue already. You are getting tired and want help keeping up with the problematic Noob's inquiries.

A VERY wealthy man once told me this with regard to sales:

Some will. Some won't. So what?

To attempt to achieve a 100% success rate is the basis for madness

Peace,
dave
Well put Dave.... Can't agree more...

@ Trevor.... in your examples (BTW the 2 links go to the same
Thread
) you were treated with respect because
it was obvious that you put in an effort to find what you
were looking to answer and you did it respectfully...

It doesn't take a University degree to see when a New member
even opened a book or not...
If they are too lazy to read simple English text and are smarta$$es
about it... It won't fly here...

I've said this before....

If a stranger comes to my home and disrespects me or my
family... there will only be seconds before my boot says hello
to his a$$ and he flies out the front door...

If on the other hand if he is respectful.... I'll invite him for supper
and even a beer...

Before I registered on LPF I saw all the Flaming and bashing
of myself and my products...

I registered here under the name that was being bashed...

I read a ton of stuff so that I wouldn't look like a Noob....

I only posted to help members and asked no questions and
showed respect to anyone giving me a heads up...
(not pi$$ing on them for helping)...

I never mentioned anything about the Flaming and Bashing..
The flaming and bashing stopped real quick.

BTW... this is the 1st time I have even mentioned anything
about those F/B incidents before I registered...

It's easy to fit in if one uses common sense and common
courtesy and one doesn't think that this Forum community
owes one like his mommy does...
And the ones that don't have that basic common sense and
run amok here.... I don't really need...

I take each new member as a complete and new untainted
entity...
It is the New member that decides how the responses will
be laid out and flow...

I don't disagree at all. If it makes any difference to you, I consider myself a newb, and I have a ton left to read and learn.

I do have a voice though, and I don't see a reason not to use. I realize this is not a self moderating forum, but consider this example, is the vote of an 18 year old any different than the vote of 90 year old?

I don't want to take this thread completely off topic though, so please I'd love to pickup that discussion in the Other section.

You dont go to a new friends house and prop your feet up, jump in all the conversations, and talk about people you didnt know, and only heard others talking about. Thats call being presumptuous, and fits you well.

We've been through this stuff, and we are a brotherhood of sorts. Most of us are friends here. No one knows you. Sure you can have a vote, and opinion. But dont act like one of the guys, because you're not. You dont haven't put in the time. We keep trying to tell you this. You'd think you'd figure it out and accept it, but you keep going, and keep throwing in "I know I'm a n00b, but I demand you accept me". Sorry, but I dont accept you. I hate when you talk about members you dont know, I hate that I have to talk to you in every thread I post, because you've posted in all of them. And I hate the fact you're demanding we accept you. Out of all your post I dont know your name, how old are you, what you do for work, ect. Not that I care, but if you want acceptance then you have to be social, instead of throwing your opinion into everything. Sure I'm opinionated, but I know what I'm talking about most times. You just throw out whatever is on your mind on everyones thread. I dont care how much you read, until you've been there it means nothing. Period.

What the he!! is a veteran privilege......

Jerry

The only big one is the veteran's section of the forum.

@TJ - I'd love to rant back, but don't want to start a flame war in this thread since it would take things completely OT. I'll start another one in the Other section later on. The basics for now, I'm a guy, 26 years old, I manage catalogs for GSA vendors and DOD suppliers. In case it isn't blatantly obvious I like lasers, animals in general and dogs specifically. I hate bugs.

@Trevor - May I derail further, easier to rant in the same thread:)

You didn't have a handbook?! I got arrested for using the secret "handshake" you told me was in it! :banned:

I enjoy epic thread derailments. :D

As long as you do not show anyone our secret voting sign, the Jackboots will leave you alone.

Didn't you get the handbook?

Peace,
dave

He!! NO... :cryyy:

The only big one is the veteran's section of the forum.

You have over 1000 posts so all you need to do is ask for the
Vets pasword.... and as soon as you log in there...you will
be entitled to send your $50.00 a month Veterans Dues...

Oh Wait.... was that wrong....
Should I have not mentioned that...:undecided:

The biggest lesson I've ever learned was when everyone around you is saying one thing, and you're the only one saying the opposite, you are wrong.

Good discussion going on here! I think that much of someones attitude depends on how said person was raised, mode of living, and type of parents they had. I know that I could be considered noobish, still have a low post count. But I am here mostly for the wealth of information and experience this forum has to offer. I have always had a hunger to research and discover the truth. And even if I never achieve vet status, I feel that I have found a great resource here. As well as having the pleasure of meeting some very upstanding people here in the process.

It's just unfortunate that some people who come here, don't have the thirst for knowledge. let alone good graces or respect. Maybe it's just a sign of the times? I often feel like that the world we live in today has lost the ability to learn and grow. It just seems like the older I get the more alien, and removed the rest of the world becomes. It just makes me cherish the few kindred spirits that I have met in my life's journey that much more!
