did you know they're making a sequel?

I was hoping so but I thought that was a joke. I haven't seen anything that's recent other than on wiki

so I said in his voice on open comms, "tiger tiger tiger"

to my suprise someone else said, also in his voice, "birdy birdy birdy"

we both laughed pretty hard

Getting responses on long-shot movie references are the best lol. My username is taken from an old movie and in all my time on forums and gaming, only two people have pointed it out, got some good responses though.

I can tell you one I hated, that wars of the worlds remake with Tom Cruise and that little girl who would not stop screaming, I got sick of that real quick.

The original was a great movie, the same can be said for "The Day The Earth Stood Still", it's unfortunate that they keep remaking movies instead of something original.

You are talking about "Escape From New York" another movie worthy of this thread. I lived in New York for 3 years and I can imagine the island of Manhattan being turned into a prison and I would have no objection to that, I guess Donald Trump may have something to say about it.

That makes it 3, get it from memory?

Yes I thought I remembered it from Escape From New York but I had to do some searching to be sure, have seen the movie at least 4 or 5 times but not too recently.

This reminds me, there are at least a couple of other movies with Donald Pleasence that belong in this thread. He was one of the greatest actors of our time, it's unfortunate that he is no longer with us. Most people will probably remember him from the Halloween movies, or the James Bond movie "You Only Live Twice", would you believe I once talked to Nancy Sinatra on Twitter. He was also in Night of The Generals and I think one or two other war movies, but he also did some great SciFi. I may have to come back later with a video or two.

Looks like I'm not the only one that can't stop watching "contact". Even my wife has seen it over and over which is REALLY saying something.
Dune was mentioned and although I haven't watched it in awhile that's another favorite. "Put the pick in there Pete and turn it round real neat" lol. Hard to explain why I like it so much.
Has anyone else seen "Sunshine"? It gets freaky but there's something about it that gets me anyways.
Ive read all the Orson Scott card Enders game books many times but I hated the movie. Thought it was awful compared to the book.
Loved both the book and movie "The Martian". Do yourself a huge favor and read the book.
There are some others that I got a kick out of that may have not been the best such as "Mission to Mars" and "Red Planet". They were interesting enough to own just like "Promethius".
2001 was amazing at the time and I still find those movies kind of mesmerizing. They get you with this fascinating tension wondering what is going to happen.

I keep pointing it out but has anyone seen "Sunshine" yet? I've never met anyone who has even heard of it and I'm not seeing any comments on it either. I would suggest that you do not watch the trailer. Turn it on, relax and let it roll over you. Everyone I have showed it to has a hard time getting it out of their head. Seriously, please watch it.

I was surprised re-reading what others have mentioned that there are a couple I haven't seen yet and I'm going to have to watch those so thanks to whoever brought them up.
A movie that I really liked when I was young was "Close Encounters of the third kind". Another film I haven't seen in a long time that I own on blu-ray extended veraion. Do yourself a favor and watch it again with the extended version. I bet hardly anyone has seen that version. That movie is a classic from 1977 and a must see.

By the way, I didn't really like that new movie "Midnight Special". I'll only say it left me frustrated with way too many questions.

Ok back to Donald Pleasence as I mentioned a few days ago. I think I may have posted this or something from the movie in another thread long ago but not in this thread. This is from 1966 and was one of the best movies ever up until that time.

I'll come back later with another SciFi movie he was in.

Actor Anton Yelchin has passed away this morning at the age of 27 in a freak accident when he was leaving home for a rehearsal where his vehicle rolled back down the steep driveway crushing him.

Contact (1997) is one of my favorites. This gif of one scene has been going around the web quite a bit recently.

More recently interstellar was amazing, felt like 2001 a space odyssey all over again.

I like stargate as well. Not so much the original movie, but especially the SG-1 series made after that. One thing i like about it is that they stuck for the concept of having stargates but not (earth built) ships with superluminous drive systems for quite some time.

Then again sci-fi is a pretty broad genre.

I like shows like Eureka because of their funny aspects whilst throwing science out of the window. On the other hand i think something like 'person of interest' is a good series as well, though the sci fi aspect of that isn't large but essential to the story.

And there are things that completely omit the 'sci' part like dr who, which i still like to watch, often wondering what the people writing those scenarios were actually smoking at the time :D

Saw Warcraft last weekend, and while it was not great, and I never really got into WOW online mmorpg, it was very enjoyable, and had some great LOTR style battles. The other recent movies for me were X Men Apocalypse (good), Captain American Civil War (great), Batman Vs Superman (shit), Deadpool (great, and fun) and the Martian.

Saw most, but not all movies mentioned in this thread. Contact stuck in my memory for quite some time, and still does, more than decade later.

I'm a bit surprised no one mentioned Pacific Rim, but Battleship got attention. Pacific Rim was just FUN, with science and logic getting tossed out along the way. Can't wait for the second one.

That scene blows my mind every time - great movie - certainly one of my favourites!

Watched the Martian last weekend, that wasn't bad, a little unbelievable the same way Gravity was, but enjoyable anyway. Watched Captain America last weekend too actually, enjoyed that!

Haven't seen Deadpool yet (So no spoilers :D!).

Some real good suggestions in this thread ... need to add them to the ever growing "to watch" list.

There many issues that got glossed over in the Martian, but I felt the biggest one was how he was starving, getting to be skinny, eating potatoes with a side of opiates in one scene, but shortly after the shortage is forgotten, and he somehow keeps functioning just fine for another 6 months! Version I watched had the moment he wrote (.)(.) back to earth, cut out for some reason, but I already saw that in enough trailers.

It's hard to spoil Deadpool... I doubt there's anything you can be told that would do a lot of damage. It's just a lot of fun, and I'm VERY glad they didn't try to make it a PG13 movie. You can watch decent quality streams online for free, just make sure your browser and AV are up to date.

Edit: Didn't watch Gravity... not sure why. Guess I'll watch it this week. Also been a while since I've seen Blade Runner. Independence Day II is coming out this weekend too I think. Idk if I'll go to theater to see it.
