Whats yours?

Name a STUPID thing youve done in the past thats made u think "why the HELL did i just do that?"

* getting married excluded :D

Mine is..
Ive just put a 12x 405nm diode in a odicforce host, set the driver with the dummy load so the diode outputs around 550mW...inserted the batteries and switched on.

On it came and i thought "that looks dim" so i pointed it at the palm of my hand, and a little puff of smoke came from my skin...i ended up nearly cauterizing an artery! its running at 550mW .

I forgot that 405nm doesnt appear as bright as 445nm! the only dim thing in the equation was ME!.

So, what have YOU done?

Shoot.

I was doing some repairs on a piece of equipment and I cut a new piece of steel with a cutting torch, I took of my gloves and was cleaning up the area where the new piece of steel was to be welded in. I grabbed the still hot piece of steel with my bare hand.
Yes there was a little sizzle and a lot of swearing the first word was "you stupid MFer".

I carry burn gel!

I was aligning optics to pass my 1.2W 532nm system into a fiber optic. I had the beam focused to a tiny point, and glanced at my laptop screen at power readouts. I felt really intense pain and turned back - I had blasted a divot out of my fingertip. That hurt.

It was actual 100F on one summer day in Boston 2 years ago. I rode my motorcycle with no protective jacket, literally in a t-shirt, jeans and helmet... It was soooo hot that when I rode during lunch my body felt like a giant hairdryer had been pointed at me.

When I rode home I took a diff route, did not see that there was a light at an intersection AT ALL. It was red for me and I saw an SUV crossing from my left and a big semi from the right. I slammed the brakes, realized I'm headed for the hood of the SUV, and pushed hard right. Next thing I know I am sliding across the now live intersection.

I am the luckiest idiot in the world. All I had was a nice big patch of skin scraped off my entire right upper arm. No meat, but let me tell you, there are a lot of nerve endings in those layers of skin... I was literally in 24/7 pain like my arm is constantly in a fire for 2 weeks.

I walked like a quarter of a mile barefoot on a freshly paved black asphalt road a few years back, in the middle of a lovely Florida summer day, a lady yelled at me to get off her lawn when I stopped on the grass, haha. Had blisters on my feet for a while from that one.

Oh, back in the day I repaired TV's , I left one overnight and went back to it the next day I thought "that mains resevoir cap should be discharged by now" , and it was...in about .03s across my thumb.

I can still feel it now, 16 yrs on.

When I visited Amsterdam for the first time I was walking around the street. Just like any other tourist, my eyes where looking everywhere but in the street. As I looked down I saw a street car train pass inches from my face. Strangely enough my first reaction was to look around and see if anyone else saw just how close I got to getting smashed! (boy did I fell like an idiot)

I had a long piece of metal on the lathe that i was boring out. The hole was just slightly bigger than my finger (it rubbed on all sides)
While it was running @ 2000RPM i stuck my finger on the inside to see if it was smooth.
Luckily nothing happened but as my finger was inside this hole that was spinning at 2k rpm's i realized bad things were going to happen if my finger got snagged.....I removed it and reminded myself that i was a complete idiot for that.

focused ~140mW of 532nm EM radiation, using a metal Aixiz lens barrel w/o its focus knob. Saw the beam suddenly reflect and morph into a huge wide ribbon, and it was waving and pulsing, it looked pretty cool, but I failed to realize that the oscillations were from the smoke that was being drawn from my thumbtip.

I just putted my finger into the wall-socket. Because I didn't know if there was current in it, I thout it just was current in it when the kitchen-lamp was on.

But if you want, I can write a whole article on stupid things I've done. Playing russian roulette, went around the security-system to a hydraul-press, and many, many more insane things.

A few years ago, I was taking apart a disposable camera to get the flash circuit out of it. I wasn't thinking too much about the fact that I had charged it up before I began taking it apart. there is just something about 250 volts shocking the hell out of you. Im lucky it didn't do any damage.

@00Giorge, I have made that mistake a few times.

Heres another one. About 9 years ago(i was 11), i was a true fire bug. I had this idea to block of one end of a metal pipe and put it in a fire. I would fill it with water and watch it shoot out. At the end of the night, I was cleaning up and grabbed the pipe not realizing that it still has water in it still. Needless to say, i dumped it on my hip and got a fist-sized blister from it.
