EDIT- Latest update:

Everything is now done and dusted. The member responsible for the hoax has been banned.

CJ has also been banned for making inappropriate remarks about Marianne. This ban has since been lifted.

Anyway, to anyone who was involved in this- good work; we handled this very well. Good to know we have a solid response even without a prior action plan. Safety remains the first priority.
_________

This has turned out to be a false alarm, set in motion by a chain of actions that came together at the wrong place at the wrong time. The user is indeed a troll, and has been permanently banned. This user is not capable of causing harm to either LaserChat users, or LPF members.

The dropping of Mibbit users was the result of ECNet's anti-bot system, triggered by the troll.

This member is not an LPF member, a check of the LPF IP database turned up no results.

Having said that, though, I do not feel that we have overreacted. I (on behalf of the OPs) do believe that we have handled the situation appropriately, and to the best of our ability. This has been the first incident of this kind during my short stay on LaserChat, and we do value the safety of our users. Although it is a hoax, we have, and will continue to treat any threat as legitimate, and deal with them as seriously as we have done now. We will not be taking any chances especially when it comes to cyber-security.

We understand that some of our members are not as computer-literate as some of us. As a result, we are obliged to ensure our users stay safe, computer-literate or not. It can be simple to brush these threats under the carpet, but one never knows when a threat is legitimate or not. It is up to us to take precautions, and make sure all of our users are protected adequately.

All users have been informed of the correct methods to secure their computer. Any user requiring help can simply ask either me (goninan_bl00d) or Things (Things) either here or on LaserChat. We have done what we can server-side, however, users also have to do their bit too- and we're willing to provide help.

Nonetheless, we still encourage others to join LaserChat. We're a growing community- and you never know how it's gonna be unless you join!

No longer relevant, for archival purposes ONLY:

Less than 10 minutes ago, we had an unidentifed member on LaserChat. He was quick to insult the majority of the members in the room, and was kicked as he was breaking the ToS of LaserChat.

This was proceeded by quite a few of us terminating unexpectedly as he left the room. Normally, when someone gets kicked, all other members are unaffected.

He has also threatened to take action against anyone who he has the IP of. We do not yet know whether he has the ability to do so or not, but until we know for sure we will be playing it safe and preparing for the worst. Although it simply may be a troll, we take all threats seriously and the safety of our users is top priority.

Here's a warning to whoever that was- we, as a collective, have the resources to find out who you are. You don't stand a chance. We have the evidence, and logs. We have everything we need. Such abuse and cyberthreats will not be tolerated.

If you are caught, the information will be handed to the relavent police authority, and you will be prosecuted to the maximum extent to which local and/or international laws allow.

In the meantime, I advise that everyone who has visited Laserchat in the past hour to insure they have proper Antivirus and Firewall software installed, updated and functioning.

Sounds like you guys pissed off the wrong person this time. I'm surprised your security is not tighter considering your member list.

All members have been informed of correct security procedures. All members have had their PCs secured.

IP checks are being run as we speak. Proper measures have been taken to prevent any damage from being done.

More info will be released as it comes.

If you wanna get technical, it's "Cracker" , hackers are good people who help with security systems, crackers are bad people who give people headaches and frustration (or at least, black-hat hackers, same thing).

Nobody ever thought it was you. You have never even been on LaserChat, as far as I know of... right?

In any case, I hope this gets resolved quickly.

Thanks Dustin.

CJs been trying to get me on Laserchat for a year. I have enough issues dealing with the drama here. I dont need more. In fact LPF is the only "social" internet area I frequent. And thats only because there are some really good people here. Plus they put up with my BS too. :eg: I used to be in a crew, but it was a live music circle, and had nothing to do with programing.

I thought Crackers only dealt with pay software. Keygens, and stuff.

If you mean, like make cracked executables for games and other software, yeah - partially true, but I explicitly remember googling some stuff back a year or two, when I woke up one day and though "Hacking. Must learn."

I gave up two seconds after opening first hit on Google, seeing what the hell one must understand and be able to do with programming and stuff, to successfuly "crack" something.

I do, however, vividly recall this one text where difference between white-hat, grey-hat, and black-hat hackers are explained, the latter being called "Crackers" for sole reason of cracking other people's stuff for their own selfish reasons.

Hackers on the other side isa kind of profession, where such people are being hired by companies to test their security systems, upgrade and better them. They usually know everything there is to know about computers.
Crackers on other hand... you get the point.

Could be wrong, but google it two clicks away.

Just so you know.... Everybody can ring their ISP and get a new IP address (if you are using a static IP) or you can force refresh the IP address from your end via the ISP. That would just give you a bit more protection if anything did happen.

You bring your own drama Mr TechJunkie I spent days reading about your posts and I have to say that you are way to favored by most. By all rules you should have been banned long ago

Hi Jay.

You need to be more careful bro. You're too easy to pick out. I knew it was you earlier. Check me out checking you out in your profile.

I'm not Jay. But I do believe he should be here rather than you

I think goninan was gonna make another post, he probably will. But it's all been sorted. He may have some peoples IPs, but theres not a lot he can do with them. We know the problem member (No one here) and the server is being fixed for mibbit (laserchat.org) users.
