For those of you that dont know what NST stands for, its short for neon sign transformer. Basically i went down to a shop that does neon signs, asked them if they had any NST's, and they gave me one free!! Pics of the arcs coming up. Its rated at 15kv @ 30ma~. About 7cm hot arcs! Sorry about the crap quality, cameras and HV dont mix ;D

Okay - take two thick wires (or coathangers), mount them securely in a V, hook the NST to them, and presto - Jacob's Ladder.
As the heat makes the arc rise up, it'll stretch out because the air is already ionized. You can get it pretty wide by the top if the ai currents don't disturb it too much.

Yeah, i am waiting for some welding metal to make a jacobs ladder, and did the coathanger one just for fun. This transformer is from a company called F.A.R.T (Dont ask me why they named it that ;D) and weighs around 10kg. I am wanting to bui;d a tesla coil when i can get around to it. Switch: i just walked into the neon sign shop, asked if they had any TRANSFORMER TYPE NST's. There are new switchmode ones avaliable now, but they dont like being shorted, in the case of an arc, and will shut down on you, you have to get the old bulky kind.
