Well, I didn't build it so bought it instead. It is a Thermoelectric based cloud chamber that doesn't use dry ice, just cold ice water for cooling the peltier. The dish is about 5" diameter and I filmed a small section when tracks started to form after about 20 minutes of cooling. The tracks emanate from a small radioactive source in the center. Enjoy!

Very cool... Litterally! ;D ;D

I'd love to know what the 'radioactive' part is...

Thanks! The radioactive source is just a small piece of beta/ gamma releasing pitchblend in a plastic bag. At some point, I'll try an alpha only source for different tracks.

"To see what cannot be seen" , that is awesome Jon, you could try a piece of Americium 241 from a smoke detector, but I believe that is a gamma only source and will only ionize other particles. Not sure if this would show up as tracks or not.
Or maybe a tritium vial, if any of the particles are energetic enough to escape the borosillicate glass.

Good stuff though

Guy's I'm trying to design an experiment to carry a cloud chamber to 100,000ft on a high altitude balloon to get particle differentiation from the earths surface and high altitude. Any thought's about how to do this? Need to build it in 4 days!

Wow, your first post is in a thread that's 3 years old?

I don't even think those members hang out here anymore, at least not recently, so I don't think they're going to be able to help you.

Sorry, guys. Lots has happened over the last 4 years, so no time for any experimentation. I will have a short window of opportunity before I disappear again. The cloud chamber here was sold and I eventually built my own which used only air cooling. I don't remember the link now, but Google for air cooled cloud chamber. The guy who designed them now sells them on eBay I think, but you can build for about 1/4 the cost. If you're interested in this sort of thing anyway. I know I was very happy with mine because I no longer needed ice of any kind and it worked well indeed! Good luck, Jon
