I am possibly looking into getting a shotgun soon. Although I probably wont buy one for another year or so. I still would like to know what I am looking for. I want a general purpose shotgun. That means I want one that I can use for hunting, target practice, sport, protection.

I want a 12ga, semi automatic, capable of shooting 3 1/2" shells.


I'm not going to spend thousands of dollars on one. But I want one that will last me.


So go at it and let me know what you guys think :beer:

Not all states require a license for "long guns". I assume by your post that California does. Since the OP doesn't have a location listed in their profile, it's imposable to say if they actually need one. Many (most?) states do not require one AFAIK.

My personal opinion is that a semi-automatic shotgun is overrated. If you don't mind a pump action gun, not much will beat a Mossberg 500 (Although it will only accept up to a 3" shell). As far as protection goes there is a lot to be said for the intimation factor of the distinct sound of a round being chambered in a good ole pump action. :D

Yeah I was gonna say, what the hell do you mean license. But no I do not need a license. Hell, I don't even need it registered.

I do hear the Mossberg 500 is a great gun. For me though in my experience. When I would be duck hunting and when I would pump to eject the shell and get a new shell in the chamber. I never seemed to pull down all the way, so the shell would get jammed and it would require taking it apart. I think a semi-automatic would be more convenient. Although I will keep the Mossberg 500 in mind.

Hehe, sorry guys. Im not really an "expert" in armory, just trying to help Flutter out :yh:

I don't think you need a license if all you are going to do is duck hunting :thinking:

Oh ok, I know what license you are talking about. I think those licenses' are for owning certain types of guns and such. I can buy an AR-15 and such without any problems though.

Yes, exactly. I was talking about gun licenses, for example owning handguns/rifles :yh:

I don't blame you for wanting a semi-auto shotgun. Pump action shotguns have never appealed to me and I don't own one despite having plenty of other guns. Try looking at some Saiga shotguns like these. I've also heard that benelli shotguns are good although they can be quite pricey.

What are you using it for? If it's for home defense, I'd definitely stick with a pump, even if its just for that pumping noise - it's a loud, unmistakable sound that will send any potential criminal running. For hunting though, I personally prefer semi-auto.

And if the pumping noise doesn't send them running you'd probably want something better than a pump shotgun. Under pressure lots of people tend to short-stroke and jam them. Also they have a slow rate of fire and low ammo capacity. It's not that they don't work, but honestly they do require some training to be used at their best.

I like my Mosberg 500ATP and I have actually disarmed and intruder back in 1982 with it just by racking it in the dark
the guy gave up immediately and screamed DON'T SHOOT the sound of a pump shot gun will stop them dead in there
tracks and you don't even have to pull the trigger :eg:

Now if you think you will have trouble with pumping it then I would suggest a Saiga auto 12 I love mine it
can spit lead down range faster than any other shot gun :)

Here is me with mine and if you look real close you can see 4 each 12 gauge shells in the air, there are 5 but
you just can't see the 5th one, and I wouldn't worry too much about 3" vers 3.5" cuz when a 1 ounce slug
hits something that something is not going to think about wheather it was a 3" or a 3.5" shell :crackup:

I have to say I have been tempted by the Saiga before. They are usually just too expensive for my taste. I can see the pure fun factor of shooting a shotgun semi-auto, but I don't think my shoulder could take that much abuse. More then a couple of 3" shells usually does me in with my 500. I guess I just need to get a rubber butt plate <?> or just where a padded vest.
