Talking Re: POLL: What's the general consensus regarding swearing?

I personally, always try to never swear, or at least. to keep it the "minimum indispensable", and censored, but this have nothing to do with my education or religion, anyway ..... i have friends that cannot speak without rain down a saint each 4 words () ..... and, sometimes, happens that i feel myself so furious that, for avoid to shoot something or someone, rain down enough saints myself for fill a book (but this don't happen too much frequently ) ..... is simply that i feel it this way, is just a personal choice .....

Anyway, i don't care too much to see swearing in others posts, and rarely take them as offenses also if directed to me ..... or, at least, if someone post offenses to me, before send back to his home a 50-Kg-pack-of-TNT in reply (), i ask if the offenses was intentional, for not make mistakes (and also, cause TNT is not for free, after all )

EDIT: i just thoughd ..... for those that don't know the expression "rain down saints", it's an old slang of my zone ..... it came from the proverb "each time you say a blasphemy, a saint fall from the paradise" ..... so, "raining down saints" means you're saying so much swearing and blasphemies one rear the other, that saints are falling like rain .....

EDIT2: BTW, about the minors ..... some of the worse blasphemies i've learned, i heard them from minors ..... don't judge only about the age

I joined LPF when I was 13, and really did not mind the swearing. Although, LPF 3 years a go is a lot different to LPF now, but kids these days grow up with these words in every day language, it's not like they haven't heard them before

Default Re: POLL: What's the general consensus regarding swearing?

Well it's all a question of culture and upbringing. Some will not be bothered in any way, others will be deeply offended, and there's a whole range of opinions between the two.

I don't mind at all, unless it's superfluous and without merit, for example, a kid cussing like sailor sam in his intro post isn't the best way to introduce himself.

But using a "Holy fuck" when trying to express extreme surprise or admiration over the specs of a particular new 445nm diode is perfectly fine by me. It's just a representation of exuberance or enthusiasm. In polite conversations, the usage of random characters like %$#*%$ !!! is perhaps prefered.

As for kids... I never understood the concept of parents trying to "shield" their children from "bad" words. it's pretty pointless because i'm sure they will be exposed to swearing at school, with their friends, etc. Unless you live in Stepford, life is real and even my mother who's quite religious, shouts out some ungodly utterances when she drops the jar of mayo on her big toe! LOL!

As for the OP, I don't really mind it being present but I try not to swear in a setting such as this one. I guess I'm prettymuch with the second option.

I try not to swear on the forum, it's only text and can easily be misunderstood as a harmful remark, and the last thing I'd want is to be banned from LPF, it's my home on the Internet, a place where I can connect with people that see lasers as an art, a marvel of science, and above all, something that should be respected for it's level of danger.

Of course, IRL I do curse, but that's because I can adequately deliver my message through my voice and body language.

IMO- people who curse too much just sound dumb...

Well of course if you add a poll and ask a population, who's members are mostly <16 years of age, about whether it's ok to swear they'll say "HELL YEAH! WHO THE FUCK CARES!?"

IMO it's not required for what we do in this forum. There isn't any situation that would require you to swear. It's immature.

Consider all the link backs and references to this forum. Do you want the rest of the net to see you all acting like kids who vent their colorful vocabulary on this board because their parent's don't tolerate it at home?

I agree with Jerry. Just say S@%T rather than SHIT! It's the same thing but gives the forum a bit more dignity.

You make a good point Tony, but what's the difference between spelling shit "s@%t" or "shit"? It's exactly the same word being said eidetically in the reader's mind. It leaves the same aftertaste.

I say "say shit when you mean shit", not "crap" (for some weird arbitrary reason) or the politically correct "s@%t". But say it rarely. Everybody will be happier.

The "F" word has now, after a hundred years, lost it's shock value in much of socity. However, If a member here needs to resort to such repeated verbal assaults, I choose to ignore them because they likely don't have a laser, or don't understand the science.

I say "say shit when you mean shit", not "crap" (for some weird arbitrary reason) or the politically correct "s@%t". But say it rarely. Everybody will be happier.
No I don't think it does leave the same after taste.

Consider censored TV shows. You'll hear a "BEEP" rather than "Shit" and even though you know what word was implied it still retains a little restraint. It's the same deal with S%#T and SHIT.

Like I said there isn't any reason anyone would ever have to use profanity on this forum. So it's not a matter of whether you should use S$%T or SHIT it a matter of why do it in the first place.

I'm not advocating against searing. When I talk with my buddies I'd do it as much as anyone else. But that is because I know them. It's a matter of showing respect. You wouldn't speak like that to anyone. Just your friends and people you know very well.

I understand that members get to know one another here and feel that they can speak freely as if they were in person. But there are many others who read information here too. It's just courteous and demonstrates good manners.
