Old guys and prostate cancer

About 3 weeks ago I found out I have prostate cancer, it was found by a PSA blood test. It has not spread and they are just going to remove my prostate and that should be it.
There were no symptoms, it was just a routine test that found it.
So call your Doc and get the test, it may save your life like me. :D

Sorry to hear of your cancer, I'm glad you seem to have caught it early.
Thanks for getting the message on testing out, all men should be checked regularly!

You didn't mention your age. Some prostate cancers
are slow to develop. What was your PSA?

I feel your pain there.

However, you are lucky to have caught this before the cancer could spread to other areas. I know of a teacher that used to teach with us for
the local MOE here a few years ago who needed to go back for Radioactive seed therapy after a ARC renewal check found something out of whack in his
blood test results.

Doctors visits do save lives!! :yh:

Are you going for additional testing or a second opinion?

Whaever they case may be, best of luck with the MDs and any treatment.

Ed, you know the PSA test was first approved to monitor people who had an aggressive form of prostate cancer to see if they relapsed. It has been shown in the past few years that the PSA test alone was a poor way of diagnosing cancer. There are many forms of prostate cancer that men have in their 20s and end up late in life passing away from some other reason with the cancer still intact and causing no problems. I hope that the surgery you had was necessary. The company that owns the patent rights on the PSA started encouraging MDs to use it for diagnosis. I hope you are well and this is just a passing thing in a long life. Paul

I had a biopsy and the result is that one side is 80% cancer.
I'm aware that the PSA can lead to unnecessary biopsies as is, it's just a place to start.

Ed, I'm happy to learn that you didn't just take the PSA at face value, because you are so right when you said that it has led to unnecessary biopsies and the consequences of those procedures. Many people have just taken the PSA at face value and statistically 1 in 1000 people may have their lives saved by the PSA, but 4-5 people will die who have had PSAs with false negatives and the group of false positives is even higher. As many as 60 people out of a 1000 will have some bad result from an unnecessary biopsy and 120-200 out of 1000 will have the anxiety of dealing with a false positive. Many people with prostate cancer that is not symptomatic have a choice as this is usually such a slow progressing cancer that they may very well die from old age before the cancer gets them. I am very glad to hear you are well informed and not making this decision without all the evidence. I hope everything goes well for you! You do deserve a long and happy life. Paul

Hi ED, I'm probably in the same boat as you.

Can you tell us what was your ratio of Free Testosterone to Total Testosterone is as a percentage?

While my PSA is a bit elevated, my Free T to T ratio is below the level requiring attention. My doctor did suggest I see a Urologist anyway. My PSA suddenly doubled a few years ago and I had a 10 sample biopsy (if anyone wants to hear how painful that is, pm me) with no anesthesia!!! All samples were negative.

So here we are a few years down the road and my PSA decides to rise again after staying flat for those years. So I guess it's time for another trip $ to the Urologist.

And I'm older than you. ;)

Got home today and everything went very well. Five hours of surgery took a bit out of me , but I'm getting better every minute. They were able to save both nerves so I wont need Viagra. Thanks for all the good thoughts and prayers sent my way.
