I've never owned a gun and my family didn't hunt or really even own guns (my dad had a 9mm while working as a coroner, but that's it), so I'm definitely not what you'd call a "gun nut". However, I've always like target practicing with an air rifle or playing paintball and personally, I'd love to get an AR-15 ("assault rifle") just for the fun of it...

Some people have hobbies, including collecting/shooting firearms.... it's not so crazy when you think the some people also play around with powerful lasers that are potentially dangerous, just for fun.

As it has been pointed out, the people who want guns to commit crimes are most likely not acquiring them through legal means, and even with further restrictions, that will not change.

If you ask people on a gun forum, the answer is simple: criminals do not follow the law. Even if you ban so-called "assault" weapons, they will find a way to get them.

Our constitutional rights should not be taken away.

End of statement.

"the right of the people to keep and bear Arms, shall not be infringed"   I don't think its any more clear than that....

I mean we are talking about our birthrights, not only ours... but our childrens as well. I dont think that the ones who "died protecting our freedoms" would take it very well that we just pissed it away cuz were a bunch of pussies, that are dependent on "the government" to save us.

I honestly believe that only tyrants would wish to disarm a free republic.

Personally I don't own any guns, but I can see why people like them.  I would love to have an AR-15 or other assault rifle even through I would probably never use it in a combat situation.  I fully support the right to own guns and believe that they should be legal as long as the owner is required to undergo a background check.

A BAN WON'T DO A DAMN THING TO STOP CRIMINALS!  Since when do drug dealers and gangsters legally obtain their weapons?

This is just another case of liberals trying to take our rights and create a nanny government that watches over us all and protects us from anything dangerous.  UK and Australia anyone?  You can't even carry a taser or bat over there.

How is the government going to help you when you're being robbed by street thugs and you can't defend yourself without some kind of weapon?

You also get morons using the school/mall massacres as justification to ban guns.  Message to clueless morons.  You don't need a gun to kill a large amount of people ::) It would be far far worse if they just brought in a backpack full of pipe bombs and blew them in a crowded auditorium or cafeteria.

You are right on target my friend. Only tyrants and would be tyrants are afraid of their gun owning citizens.

sooner or later they will say "were not saying you can't own guns were just saying you can't use them ever and gun range's are bad for the Environment and so are bullet's" so just hang them on your wall and be a proud gun owner . mabe we will let you hunt a few times a year but only a few of you at a time and you have to buy a tag for the food you want to kill and eat .....

Nope just fully automatic.  I can understand the need for a semi-automatic.  I'm a bad shot.  So when I've got that deer in my sights and miss with the first shot, I want to be able to fire of another shot quickly after it.

This does NOT apply to pull the trigger with a barrage of lead following for as long as I hold the trigger down.

Yup- Well they are trying to ban Semi-Auto "Assault rifles"

This is a "Bowling for Columbine Question"
I mean i am from Germany so we are not allowed guns in privat posession anyway.

Banning any type of guns is like the saying black or white, there is and there always will be a grey.
Banning guns will only prevent children of killing themselves by acciedent, or keep people of committing suicide through a gun.

The children are the main reason i would vote for a ban in general but people who are willing to kill someone with a gun will get hand on some somehow. People who are willing to kill themselves are going to find another way to do it.

Criminals are out of this topic as they follow their own rules. The blackmarket holds everything in stock you are willing to fire, throw or blow up at someone.

By the term Children, do mean anyone under a certain age? lets say less than 13?

If someone of that age or less were to get a hold of an Assault Rifle, wouldn't really be the irresponsible parents fault? The government can't protect us from ourselves.(Although they sure do try :))
I am a firm believer that if you aren't a responsible person who isn't willing to learn all safety percautions of owning a gun, then you shouldn't be allowed to have one.

All Guns and lasers!! should be cleaned and locked up after use. Also add a trigger lock and a magazine lock.

Crap like that is no ones fault but the parrents.

Just because a weapon has a bayonett lugg on it, doesn't mean that you will have an use a bayonett.  Infact, I don't know anyone that uses a Bayonett!!!

Plenty of people use Assault...excuse me...semi-auto rifles for hunting.  A 5.56 nato round is designed to kill varment(squirels, rabits, and such) not Deer or Elk.

As for the whole Canada thing and the low crime rate and people not complaining,
why would you complain that you can have an assault rifle, when you guys could never own one to begin with.  You can't miss what you've never had.
As for the whole crime rate thing, well there are many things that I could say about this, but I will just say this.

USA has a population of 305,880,000
Canada has 33,566,000
You do the math

;)You only know what the media wants you to know. ;)

Are you a Liberal? ::) First off, who says you can't hunt with an AR? You'd obviously look odd lugging it in the bush but it can be done... Also, there is no ban on "assault rifles" in Canada; you simply need to get a "Restricted PAL" and have the gun registered. I fail to see why you are so against these "assault rifles". They are not used illegally(for the most part), generate revenue for the local economy, etc.

Laser pointers for instance; same scenario, different device. Aside from lectures, astronomy, etc, they don't really serve much other purpose. [sarcasm] Maybe we should ban them in fear that someone might down a plane one day[sarcasm/]... Seriously though, banning them will not stop would-be @holes from shining them at planes, cars, etc. You can ban them all you like but it's the legal owners and legitimate users that are affected.

As for your statements about crime rate and firearm ownership, I have to disagree. Anyone that goes through the process of registering their firearms and obtaining the proper licenses is not going to use them to commit crimes. Maybe it's time you started looking at the criminals instead of the legal gun owners.

Hey now, I never really voiced an opinion for or against this ban, I was just saying how I can't see how this ban would affect legitimate uses of these guns, and was asking what non-homicide-related uses they might actually have.

As for the population of Canada vs the population of the US, and the respective crime rates of the two countries, I'll point out that Venezuela, for example, has one of the highest murder rates in the world, yet has less population than Canada. While Japan, having some of the highest population density in the world, has among the lowest crime rates.. These are per-capita rates, so population and population density really have nothing to do with it.

I'll admit, I don't know a lot about guns, and I'm one of those people who hear the words "assault rifle" and assume this means full auto etc, so I apologize for my ignorance, but really, back to my question, what purpose does a pistol grip and grenade launcher serve when hunting in the bush?

[edit]Oh, and heh, I was dealing with a printer jam at work and was reading through the manual when it told me to "riffle the paper", I couldn't help but chuckle at the thought of taking an assault rifle to the printer..  ;D[/edit]
