As it says in the title, my schools web filter sucks, this is because it blocks games, LPF, CPF, airsoft websites, but doesnt block www. goatsemarathon .com <--- A disgusting shock site, I mean, how CRAP is that xD.

I discovered this when I told my buddy about it and he told his buddy about it who put it on in business studies class and pwned everyone's eyes (including the teachers's).

A little story.

ANYTHING with goatse in the title should be avoided

VERY un-family friendly

Remember folks, you can't un-ring a bell.

Peace,
dave

I broke the link so people won't click it.

Thanks. At least someone has to "make an effort" to burn that into their psyche forever. At least there will be no "unsuspecting" exposures.

Peace,
dave

if LPF is blocked at your school it is because at some point YOU have entered this website.
so my guess is that there's somebody monitoring the history of the browser used, and then blocking the "unappropiate" sites..

if he/she gets to see the goatse site, he/she'll block it right away ;)

Heh heh. Now, if I was a moderator I'd nuke the link, but since I'm not...

I think it's funny how these things circulate. I've seen the most crazy stuff over my years as a moderator. Stuff a lot worse than the classic 'goatse' :) Now there is nothing that surprises me on the internet, it's like 'whatever, another shock site... I'm off to watch TV...'.

I say get it all out of your system now, because from then onwards you'll have no problem with this kind of stuff :)

there are numerous ways around web filters....

it can be as simple as typing the site's ip address rather than the domain name, though a good deal of filters will block this. you can also change the ip address into octal, hexadecimal, or binary and use that... though some filters are smarter.

an old and simple trick I used to use was to use http://translate.google.com or http://babelfish.altavista.com to translate a page from english to english, though my school caught that one pretty quick. You can also use any other "translation" sites, such as the ones that insert chuck norris into webpages, or make your webpage sound like it was written by Mr. T or that convert your webpage into l33tsp33k etc. Another google trick which works for quick info and very simple pages is to use google to search for cache:www.example.com and it will bring up google's cache of that page.. all the links and images will be broken, but if you just need to read a bit of text that hasn't changed recently, it works well for that. You can also try http://archive.org for really old stuff that hasn't changed in a while.

you can try using a proxy server, by checking a site like http://proxy-list.net or similar, then typing the proxy server's ip address and port into firefox or ie's connection settings... or you can use a web-based proxy such as one of these: http://www.freeproxies.org/list.htm ... some filters will go as far as to block any web page containing the word "proxy", so you can either set up your own web-based proxy using some free website hosting place that allows cgi.. google for "nph-proxy.pl" if you want to try that. also, some web-based proxies use ssl encryption making them quite hard to block... try https://ctunnel.com or https://vtunnel.com

another thing you could try is adding .nyud.net or cob-web.org:8888 to route through a cache-server such as http://www.example.com.cob-web.org:8888/ though I find these are often slow and unreliable.

another method that's really slow, is a service called Tor. you can get plugins for firefox that use it or you can get preconfigured firefox bundles that include it. It encrypts your data then relays it between a half a dozen computers, so it's basically unblockable, but really slow.

One last thing you can do, which I've found works best is to set up a ssh server on your home computer and tunnel all your connections through it. it sets up a virtual SOCKS server that you can use as a proxy for almost all programs that use the internet.

there's more, but I have to go pretty soon

lol yeah, my school blocks everything, google images, youtube and all!! It would be nice to find a way to get around it, i tried putting https:// instead of http:// but it still didnt work. seems the geeks that host our schools internet are kinda smart ::) Never thought of the google translator idea, it doesnt look to suspicious to teachers either ;)

I can't recall now, the other ways I was going to suggest to get around filters... but here's a writeup that gives a few helpful pointers: http://www.boingboing.net/censorroute.html

so yeah, the easiest thing you can try is https://vtunnel.com

...otherwise if you want to do it the über geeky, and mostly infallible way you can do this:

you'll need: a broadband internet connection, a computer that's always on, the ability to access the browser at school's options menu, and the ability to run small programs on the school's computer. (some places go all out and block the ability to run programs, which is a whole other story)

At home, you'll need to be running a SSH server.. this basically provides a fancy encrypted way of logging into a computer over the internet. If you're running a unix-based at home system such as linux, mac osx, freebsd, etc, you may already be running one.. otherwise you can type sshd to start it and add it to /etc/rc.d to have it start automatically.
If you're running a Windows computer you'll need to either install cygwin and then install the linux version of sshd, which I won't cover here, or you can download a number of different windows programs that do it. http://www.bitvise.com/winsshd.html is one such program. (though iirc it only gives you a 30 day trial period)
Now, once you have a SSH server running at home, you need to connect to it from school. If you're running a unix based system at work/school/china, you probably have everything installed for this already, but I'm not going to go into that. If you're running a windows based system you can run a small program called PuTTY to connect to your home computer. It doesn't need to be installed, and can be run off a floppy disk, usb flash drive, ipod, or by emailing it to yourself.
Run PuTTY, put your home computer's IP address [sup]*[/sup] into the IP address box.. on the left, click SSH, Tunnels, then under "Add Forwarded Ports" type a number and click the "Dynamic" checkbox. Click Add. Click Open. a box will eventually pop up asking for your username and password, type those of your home computer.
Now, go into your web browser's options menu and find something to do with advanced connection settings.. there should be a setting in there for "connect through a proxy server" select "SOCKS". for the proxy server address type "localhost", and for the port, type the number that you typed into putty's port screen. (in firefox this is: Tools, Options, Advanced, Network, Settings, Then "Manual Proxy Configuration" then type "localhost" and port into where it says "SOCKS")

TA-DA you can now browse the internet just like you could at home... in fact, you ARE browsing the internet from home.

not working? are you on wireless, or otherwise have a router at your house? check out http://portforward.com for information on how to set up your router to allow this.

If your school's browser is configured to not give you the option to get into the preferences screen, PM me, there's bound to be a way around that.

* - if you don't know your home IP address, check out http://whatismyip.com (while browsing from home)

The IT man has no control of the filter at our school, it is government run.
