I'd say that is the state of the art. As good as you get.

Those LEDs are very high tech. I saw magnified 100X pics yesterday of the phosphors and gold grids in that LED.

Now I got to get one.
Laserrod, I know that there are brighter lights out there, but when you consider price, bulb life, run time and most important...brightness for SIZE. This little light can't be beat! So easy to mod too! I like it so much, I think I'll order up some more to modify...

Hey Morepower, just wondering if you ever got your parts to do the MXDL/Cree Q5 mod? I know you said you had a lux meter and was curious about the output before and after...

I've got the emitters and the torches but am still waiting on the drivers to show up. When I have them I will take the before and after measurements, though I don't have any 3V CR123's so i'll have to power it with the lab PSU i've got.

how would this flashlight compare too a 2mil candlepower one, would this be brighter, i know lumens and candlepower are 2 different things, but you can still probably see which one is brighter. Because if this will be brighter im gona order the parts to make it.

Two different animals...I mean, I don't know candlepower vs lumens, but I believe the 2 million CP light you are probably talking about is one of those 'huge' things that you see at Costco. The kind that you just about have to have a generator for. Ha Ha! Or, at least a wheel barrow to carry it! If you compare this mod with a regular hand held flashlight, then it is a fair comparison. It is probably 10 times brighter than a 6 D Mag light. Even if you buy the $24 dollar LED upgrade for the Mag light, you will only get about 140 lumens.

This little tiny modified light will put out 228 lumens in the palm of your hand. So, when compared fairly, it can't be beat...(size wise)

Hey jayrob, out of curiosity how did you ground the PCB to the housing ?? Just solder across to the alluminium screw in module ? I've got all the parts now, I just need the time to build it as i'm in the pool industry and it's summer here.

Hey...What do you know? I'm the project manager for West Coast Pools, Inc. (California, U.S.) It's winter here! It's summer where? Anyway, you'll notice that the stock driver in the MXDL, just has a small solid wire 'pinched' between the board and the aluminum housing. I just did the new driver the same way! I soldered the small wire to the outer ring of the new driver (ground) and then bent it over so it would get wedged in tight. Let me know your before and after meter readings!

Jay, thanks for this guide! I think I'm about to build a few.
Before I start, do you know how well these Q5 LEDs hold up to being overdriven? I was thinking that if they're anything like the other high-power LEDs I've played with, provided a bit of heatsinking, I should be able to overdrive them to about 150% of the rated power without any trouble at all.
Does this sound reasonable to you?
Any ideas? I was thinking maybe the 1400mA AMC7135 boards at DX.
Thanks again

Hi Matt, no I haven't tried to drive them over 1000mA. But, for the price, why not try it! I like your idea. Be sure to let me know what you find if you decide to try this...

(I saw that those circuits are lower voltage...so, sounds like a different host flashlight huh?)

Maybe a different flashlight is in order.
But if my guess is right, the LED will have a voltage drop of around 4V, add to that the ~.3V drop of the 7135, and you'll need 4 NiMH, 4 alkaline primary, or 2 Lithium cells.

When I get around to trying it I'll let you know. It'll be several weeks, I'm really busy until the new year.

okay it wasnt 2mil it was 2,000,00, it was one of the cheaper spot light types..i think this handheld might be brighter or just as bright as it, im gona buy it tonight prob,  and its actualy white instead of yellow like the spotlight one.

hopefully putting it together and figuring out how wont be to hard.

oh, almost forgot, does a 3.6v lithium battery give more power or just last longer because 3.0v are cheaper and i suppose the circuit will bring them both down to 3.7v, so will the 3.6v give more and and if it does how much more?

Not a whole lot more. I don't have a meter but visually, it's not much of a difference. Also, you will see that it is a very easy mod...

Cool it will only cost about 38 dollors with a charger and some 3.6v batteries i found, how dangerous are unprotected batteries in this, i figure if i take them out every once in awhile and measure the voltage and if its down near the dangerous lvl il just recharge them. Or i could just charge them up every night since i think its better to charge them up when there only halfway discharged.
