It's not the people who are actively posting to this forum I'd worry about - it's the guys silently reading and saying nothing - lurking in the shadows behind bogus IP addresses on hacked accounts. It's true some moron out there might do something immensely stupid and we'll all hear about it on the news, but here's the truth of the matter:

If we allow ourselves to be roped into a society that makes learning about things that might be dangerous into a crime, then the element we are seeking to stifle will have, in fact, won. It's true that people go to extremes in the name of "public safety" - but many societies have become dangerous to live in because anything outside the "accepted norms" has become an offense, and freedom is no longer an option.

Everyone here shares a fascination and love of lasers. It's an odd hobby, but it's from the ranks of folks who are here that will come the next generation of super-techie types that will create some quantum leap in our understanding and use of technology.

The US is already starting to lag behind the rest of the world in technological innovation. China and India are becoming spectacular players on the technology field. All we need now to seal our fate as only CONSUMERS of technology, rather than innovators, is to close off forums like this because we're afraid someone might do harm instead of good with the knowledge.

It's not the tool - it's NEVER the tool - it's the person using it.

A hammer can build a home, or crack a skull.

A knife can excise cancer, or pierce a heart.

A hand can caress, or punch.

There are some things in this world that have no other real use than to do harm, and I'm not concerned about laws and attitudes governing them. But lasers have as many purposes as there are people to imagine what can be done with them. And imagination has always preceeded invention, and eventually, our collective reality. Einstein himself said that "Imagination is more important than knowledge". Here, people can learn, play, imagine - and hopefully someday - invent.

Those who would be offended by the open sharing of knowledge and interest here, are simply using only a small part of their imagination - and missing the wider picture - by only imagining the dark possibilities.

Imagine a new reality - a better reality - and maybe if enough of us do that we can actually make one. We cannot combat the forces of ignorance WITH ignorance.

I am surprised that nobody here is staring at his screen with his remaining good eye. Maybe the authorities couldn't shut down this forum but they sure can make owning a class IV laser very illegal. And maybe that would include the n2 laser but as they say when lasers are outlawed only outlaws will have lasers.

The truth of the matter is homeland security takes a big interest in laser and high voltage forums probably more than drug forums. What if you accidentally pointed your laser at a plane and about a year later the FBI are knocking at your door.

All they would have to do is get a warrant for the server logs of this site find out whose ip is posting then get a warrant from your isp to find out whose ip address that is and the server logs show you buying all sorts of electronic parts and lasers they will definitely be able bamboozle a judge into signing a search warrant for your property seize the laser and get a confession out of you or interview people you know and even get a indictment on you.

With todays terrorism laws the burden of proof is even lower than for a non terrorist crime such as murder. almost every DA will savor frying a patriot terrorist and nothing but the most expensive lawyer will you have a snowball chance of ever getting justice.
all i am saying is be very carefull you are being watched!!

The members here are always promoting safety. What is your malfunction?
I knew you were full of it when I first replied to one of your posts. So why don't you

of course it only takes one person. but in your original post you made it seem like we would all do something to get lasers and this forum made illegal/shut down

If you feel this way, go tell it to other laser forums, because here, we are all safe (hopefully) and we aren't stupid enough to point a laser at a plane.

even if we did point a green laser at a plane, assuming it were at 27, 000 feet (which is kind of low for a cruising airplane). And you had a freak green laser that had a .5 mrad, the dot (not really a dot anymore) would be more than 4 meters across. and I'm not positive, but i don't think that causes blindness or eye damage or anything. And thats also assuming the laser magically curves around the nose of the plane straight into the pilot's eye.

but i'm not that stupid, so that wouldn't even happen

and how does this have to do with terrorism?

and by the way, I have 2 good eyes. Just thought I would let you know

bye bye!

if you read this, just letting you know, you kicked yourself off by suggesting the idea that we were mishandling our laser "toys"

One less spastic person to ramble about things that are pointless! ;D
Will be sad to see you leave but if you can't really embrace what the forum is about it would be better if you weren't regularly viewing. We're not forcing you to be here after all.
