Starting off my story

Watched the kipkay video about flashlight hacking or whatever it was but when i tried it myself i ended up with shit parts and more parts and a untouched mini mag flashlight and 2 broken 5mW laser and 1 5mW laser that i added 1 extra button cell to. I crack open a 360 to take out its laser but no laser was found. So all i could do was say :wtf: kipkay laser are gay. And thats the end of my story remember this.

That's the point i never even knew that i wasted like 30 dollars on this crap but the mini mag flashlight i use that.

Cancelled my MakeZine subscription when he was hired.

I don't know why, but I absolutely loathe that man.

If it was just the bad, dangerous, or uninformative tutorials, I'd ignore him. If it was just the smarmy radio voice, I wouldn't care, but somehow, he irks me to the very core of my being. I think it might be a combination, the fact that he's incredibly successful and has made hundreds of thousands of dollars giving bad advice *combined* with the fact he has a smug used car salesman personality, makes me absolutely despise him.

I'm no fan of kipkay, but in his defence, he sparked a desire to build lasers to many. Many people on this forum discovered the burning light via the 'flashlight hack'.

I had interest in lasers for years, but was rekindled after watching that video.
Never built it, but continued to seek out info and learn.


Is it just me? or does the first post smell like propaganda? :thinking:

Meh, I admit Kipkay's vids helped me find out about DIY high powered lasers. However I honestly can't figure out why the idiot is still around. I'm rather surprised a few blind smokers aren't sitting in lawyers offices filing lawsuits. Even if someone loses a lawsuit, repeated lawsuits = repeated legal costs which can kind of ruin things for a person.

I've yet to see any realistic safety guidance in his videos. It's like telling people how to drive a car, but leave out the info about when to stop, yield the right of way or anything else. The smart ones will hopefully figure things out before they get hurt. However the ones barely smart enough to pull off his "hacks" are bound to end up not so good.

And I won't even get into the misinformation like calling BR diodes "blue" over and over.

The guy is a walking talking youtube spamming wannabe.

I should post a picture of the mess of kipkay. Cause ive broken so much stuff watching different videos but none helps.

I found out about KipKay right here on the Forum after I joined...
The only thing I don't like about KipKay is is total lack of Laser Safety
and general Laser knowledge and his continued I'm the First BS...

On top of that he only touches the very surface of any of his builds
(the so called hook) so that you will need to by more info and parts
from them.

There are some good basic ideas but he has no technical knowledge
that I have seen in his videos...

He should stick to other projects and leave the Laser builds to people
that know what they are doing... IMO

I un-subbed his channel yesterday after he posted yet another sell-out video, I just can't stand his SPAM!

I have to admit that the guy has good video shotting skillz and general ideas (his Volumes on trick with cameras are very good actually), but as long as he stays away from lasers, nobody will get hurt.

His lasers... ahhh *facepalm*
Burning flashlight = never shows you the butt of flashlight when the laser is on , does he?
Two things = he DID use a driver, just didn't tell nobody cause it would add additional $20 expense to the project and complication, and losses in popularity,
And there is effectively no switch on the flashlight as the reflector is drilled out so it cannot press the socket base to sever the connection. In other words, you have to unscrew the entire tailcap to turn the laser off. Horrible idea.

His Bluray lighter,
2x button cells.
Presuming this is a SF-AW diode with boost converter , it would aproxiately draw around 250-300 mA, making a total runtime on batteries no more than couple of minutes... Not mentioning the effort of blinding the person with cigarette.

Bluray laser phaser... 150OHM resistor and a diode in series. Give me a break.

Walter 007 laser = extension from 3 to 4 button cells is only mentioned in his Instrucables, again, gaining on popularity on the video because of simplicity.
Total of 6 V with DDL driver he mentiones is not going to drive a 5Vdrop diode at 100mA, tell you that. Meaning? He used a real driver like Flex or something when shooting the burning.

Is anybody living near this guy?

The reason there are no smokers with blind spots is because his videos are so bad and vague no one has actually completed any of his builds.

I would like too know how many people have actually completed a project of his using only the information he gives.

I have seen that thing like 12 times and never got it to work.

Don't ruin you maglite for that. It is not working anyhow.

Do some more reading here, and you will find youself building some nice lasers in nice hosts. That actually do work.

I haven't touched the maglite it still works.
