This was taken by photographer Sergio Tapiro called "The Power of Nature" and I was just mesmerised when I saw it.
It's every landscape photographer's dream to catch something like this !
It won the third prize in the Nature Singles category of the World Press Photo awards 2016.

Just wanted to share, hope you enjoy as much as I did.

Seriously stunning. That is gorgeous! I wonder how much time he spent trying to get such a shot at location, these are those "chasing the dragon" type shots.

Mesmerized, stunning, gorgeous, astonishing, wallpaper? :scared: It's the photo of a lifetime yes, and the kind of photo I would expect to see in National Geographic, and I would be out of there after taking that photo, not because I just got the photo of a lifetime, but because I wouldn't want to be within 100 miles of that thing. I wish we had digital cameras back in 1980, I don't think I even owned a camera at the time. I saw an eruption of Mt. St. Helens much larger than that a few days before the big one from about 35 miles away. I and a friend went back 2 weeks after the May 18th eruption and everything was black for many miles and part of the mountain was gone.

I and my friend once hiked up very high on Mt Rainier and there was an earthquake while we were up there, there are steam vents all over that mountain and frequent earthquakes, if that thing ever blows the whole state of Washington is toast. There are some kind of lizards that live on the mountain, and this is a cold environment, lizards have to stay warm, I am guessing the lizards must live in or at the opening of the steam vents and not stray too far away.

What's that volcano in Italy with a city of I think 700,000 at the base of the mountain, I forget at the moment but that is an accident waiting to happen. People should not live near active volcanoes.

What a stunning capture, WOW!!!

Hey Pi R Squared, I did a google search for that, here you go .....
Vesuvius has erupted frequently and is the only volcano on the European mainland to have erupted within the last hundred years. Today, Vesuvius is regarded as one of the most dangerous volcanoes in the world because of the population of 3,000,000 people living nearby and its tendency towards explosive (Plinian) eruptions. It is the most densely populated volcanic region in the world.

The way the lightning illuminates the cloud is really something, plus the fire up top in the soot and the magma on the mountain, he caught it all.
It's almost too perfect, that's a one in a million that he caught the lightning just then.

Very nice. I can see faces in the plumes. Cloud gazing was fun as a kid.

Glad you guys like it too.
I keep having to go back and have another look at it as well.
It looks so surreal, quite an amazing shot.
Looks like it was an extended exposure of at least a few seconds.
