it's interesting how a change in light makes all the difference in the world.

so are cds
even metal ones
get a dvd or cd that has a bare spot. or a cheap label and look at a light through it
writable cds/dvds also do it

Everything is transparent if you make it thin enough. Literally, everything.

thats how some scientist proved material is not 100% solid, he took metal (gold i believe) and noticed light went through it easily.

someone i know has a gold film cd and it can be seen through too lol

^You're talking about Rutherford and his backscattering experiments. Real close, but he actually shot alpha particles through a gold foil, instead of light.

This was still in the times of the "plum pudding" model. His experiment, and the fact the the alpha particles did scatter, including some being scattered almost straight backwards, showed that atoms have a large, positive nucleus, leading to the Rutherford model that everyone now learns in chemistry before they know any quantum mechanics, with the cute little rings of electrons around the nucleus.

Of course, quantum mechanics all came along soon after Rutherford, so his model didn't really last all that long, but it is still taught today as a precursor or for those who will never go as far as QM.
