I can see my LCD screen fine, but to others it's dark. How To:

Motive/Goal: It's the middle of the night. You are out "in the field" & it's pitch black -Can't even see the hand in front of your face. You have your lap top along & are surfing the web thanks to a friendly Wi-Fi hack. However, ONLY YOU can see/visualize the LCD screen on your computer. No one else can! A police car drives by & well keeps driving. He sees nothing. There is no "back light" coming from your lap top.


^There has to be a way & when I mean "way," I mean hack lol.

Myvu glasses? -If so, how exactly do they work? Does my LCD on my computer screen become totally blacked out? Also, I have noticed that all the Myvu glasses I have came across are NOT wireless. > Wifi hack?

I use the iTV Goggles in bed to not bug my wife to keep the room dark so she can sleep. I actually just close the laptop and place it next to me. Then I use a wireless keyboard and a gyro mouse to surf the web or play a game. I hope this helps you out some. P.s I do not have the wireless model as it was out of my budget but they do have a wireless version for $269 on @M@Z0N.

Why not just take the money that you are going to use on some fancy glasses and get an internet connection...

Thanks for the helpful comment. My lap top is hooked up to a wireless security camera ...or will be anyways. That security camera is there because it has a device built in called a CCD which can pick up IR, since the naked eye can not. Why do I need to pick up IR? Because my diode is an IR diode. Why am I using an IR diode? Because this is for a night vision instrument.

So what's it matter if my computer screen is lit up or not. Because I am using these instruments to shoot the coyotes that have been eating our livestock for the past year or so & if they see any type of backlight, it will scare them away, thus my reasoning in trying to "black-out" the LCD light.

think I saw a DIY short arc flashlight on candlepower forums that would smoke that mega ray

Ah, I see. You gotta explain this stuff in the OP. It sounded like you were parking out in front of peoples' houses at night, stealing their internet, and trying to avoid the cops. :crackup:

You could use privacy filters. it will still project light, in a vertical bar shape, back onto your face, though. You will have to turn the brightness down on your screen too, but that would probably be the most economical solution.

I don't think it's guna work tho. -I am more worried about the backlight rather than the light from the screen itself as the majority of the time, my "target" will be in front of me & will not see the LCD screen

You know for a while I couldn't quite figure out what the title of the thread meant. I wish I had an answer to your query, but instead I have a suggestion for the thread's title that may bring someone in who does know the answer:

Change the title to "How to: LCD that I can see, but others can't?".

The way it is now makes it seem like you're asking help how to make it so your LCD is brighter, when in fact you're asking the opposite! Hope that helps =).

Stop by a large bank chain, they will probably have those 3M filters for their computers and you can see how they perform. I've never thought to see what they look like in the dark, but they don't look like they'd be expensive.

As for the light that is projected from the screen and reflected off your face towards your target, you can always try to just turn down the brightness, or add a different filter to the privacy filter to darken it even more.

A local telcoms shop uses those filters as well. When they're signing up a customer to the network and handling private details on their intranet, they place the privacy filter over the LCD. My friend was getting signed up for an iphone and they took down his CC#, drivers license and other stuff for a credit check.

Being polite I stepped back and looked at/played with an android phone and when I turned back a few minutes later to see how they were progressing, the privacy screen was over the LCD and it just appeared black to me. It was only when I thought "oh, the printer cartridge" and walked over to let him know I'll go get a printer cartridge for my printer while hes getting signed up, did the screen's visibility come back.

Yep they work very well. I had to be 3 feet from the screen and on a pretty much direct angle to read it. Any variance and the screen would get progressivly darker. I even said "thats a cool privacy screen! - works well!".

Mind you this was in a brightly lit telco store trying to sell flashy phones, not a pitch black field trying to shoot cyotes!
